About Us:


Western Libraries (WL) provides the library and archival expertise and infrastructure - information resources, technology, people, and spaces - required to cultivate and mobilize knowledge, and accelerate excellence in teaching, research and scholarship.

The Research and Scholarly Communication Functional Unit within Western Libraries, helps support the research and scholarship mission of the University by collaborating with researchers across campus to advance the creation, management, dissemination, and preservation of research and scholarship.


Responsibilities:


The Technical Specialist provides support to the grant-funded research projects known as the Northern Tornadoes Project and the Northern Hail Project by assisting in the delivery of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) services provided by Western Libraries.

The role also works closely with the Map and Data Librarians and other GIS technician to provide high quality map and geospatial services to the Western user community.

The Technical Specialist works in collaboration with faculty, researchers, and students to support their research and facilitate the achievement of their research objectives by providing support on geographical information and related specialized data.


Qualifications:


  • Education:
  • 3-year University Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Geography or other disciplines that provide training in GIS, cartography, or geomatics
  • College diploma in GIS would be an asset
  • Experience:
  • 2 years of experience using GIS software and providing customer service in a relevant research or academic environment
  • Knowledge of tornado classification and rating procedures used by Northern Tornadoes Project is preferred
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • In-depth knowledge of GIS and digital cartography data and demonstrated proficiency with the ESRI ArcGIS software
  • Experience with current Esri software (e.g. ArcGIS desktop, ArcGIS Online, Survey123, ArcGIS Pro, Spatial Analyst)
  • Experience working as an ArcGIS Online Organization Administrator
  • Experience analyzing and processing raster mosaic datasets within the ArcGIS Server environment
  • Ability to collect and discern relevant data to create and interpret reports
  • Customer service skills to understand customer needs and expectations, with a desire to deliver helpful and reliable service to the University community
  • Decision making and problemsolving skills to resolve complex technical issues
  • Detailoriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
  • Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
  • Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
  • Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users with demonstrated training skills both oneonone and in a group setting
  • Ability to provide solutions and ideas for improvement by using imaginative approaches where constructive thinking and innovation are required
