ABOUT THE ROLE


Reporting to the Chief Operating Engineer, the Operations Technicians are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the TransAlta facility on a 24 hour per day, seven day per week schedule.

They are accountable for the safe and economical operation of equipment on TransAlta site.


ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Operations and monitoring of all plant systems consistent with requirements of Technical Standards and Safety Act.
  • Working closely with shift partners to ensure high standards of communication and plant operating procedures and policies are maintained.
  • Working with other staff to ensure the health, safety and environmental systems are maintained and managed including safe work plans, the safe isolation of equipment and systems to perform maintenance work.
  • Performing routine water tests on a regular basis and understanding water chemistry and water and waste management operations.
  • Trouble shooting all plant systems to ensure optimal operations and taking corrective action when required. Submitting job requests on those systems that require maintenance work.
  • Maintaining the units within all applicable guidelines and regulations, including emissions, efficiency, heat rate, capacity and safety.
  • Maintaining a complete set of logs that includes all information on normal operating parameters, and detailed information on upset conditions.
  • Competently starts up and shuts down in both normal and upset conditions.
  • Performing routine preventative maintenance checks on various plant systems and equipment and performs minor maintenance work on shift when required.
  • Maintaining a thorough knowledge of the plant systems and developments, and updates training material as changes to the plant systems are made.
  • Take an active role in first aid emergency response situations regarding fire, health and safety and environmental incidents.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preferred qualifications for an operations technician are an Ontario 3rd Class Stationary Engineers certificate of competency.
  • Minimum requirement for an operations technician is an Ontario 4th Class Stationary Engineers certificate of competency.
  • Two to five years' experience as an operating technician in a power generation facility or large integrated process plant.
  • Gas turbine and cogeneration experience preferred.
  • Strong Safety orientation.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to learn and train others.
  • High level of communication skills.
  • High tolerance for stress.
  • Able to work in teams and influence others.
  • Must be able to work continuous rotating 12hour shifts.
  • Must have the ability to access all plant equipment including stairs, ladders, and vessel entry where restricted access exists.
