GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY


The Technical Advisor (TA) is responsible for providing expert advice on the root cause of higher value losses and whether proposed repairs are directly linked to the claim.

The TA searches source material for alternate causes, conducts site inspections, and investigations to complete their analysis and determine if repair estimates are justifiable given their findings of the accident/loss.

The TA provides technical advice on other factors that may have caused or contributed to the loss. They provide their expert opinion to SGI Canada and Auto Fund staff including management and legal.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Inspections & Consulting- Inspects and analyzes damaged vehicles, equipment, and failed mechanical components to establish the root cause of the failure and rule out any other possible contributing factors and/or degree of wear prior to claim.- Writes high level detailed reports outlining the results of their investigations.- Conducts forensic inspection on fire and water damaged vehicles, components, various appliances, and equipment- Investigates and consults on negligence liability, injury severity, and fatality and potential fraud claims, there they may reconstruct the incident. Investigates defects and initiate recalls with Transport Canada, and Original Equipment Manufactures (OEM)- Determines the scope of loss, evaluates and audits vendor damage appraisals for accuracy, and negotiates repair approvals for replacement cost, wear and tear, depreciation, etc.- Establishes reserves (repair estimates) for the repair value and provides information to assist adjusters in adjusting the claim file.- Reviews shop work orders to identify failure-related repairs and parts.- Provides average life expectancies of whole components and individual parts for the establishment of betterment factors including maintaining the betterment guide for SGI Canada and SGI Auto Fund.- Disassembles and reassembles components for forensic inspection, including reverse engineering of components to determine cause of failure.- Research information and consults with industry experts.- Represents the interests of the corporation in Court, the Rates Appeal Board, and/or other judicial, legal, institutional, or regulatory groups or bodies.- Determines approved contractors to use for repairs; directs contractors on what specific repairs are to be made; and addresses issues with contractor invoices or quality of work.- Conducts site visits to repair vendors to determine if the scope of the damage or loss is proportionate to the reported accident.


Training & Reporting- Develops and provides training and coaching to SGI Canada and Auto Fund staff on vehicle or equipment losses, repair methods, estimate creations (written and electronic), and cost control methods.- Provides vehicle and equipment repair appraisal expertise, technical advice, and support to SGI Canada and Auto Fund staff on claim files and in meetings with customers, brokers, contractors, and vendors.- Prepares and completes a claim assignment form on each file to determine, track, and evaluate the outcome of their file involvement.- Prepares reporting and analysis on inspection and estimating activity for file and record purposes.- Provides expert advice on, analysis of, and interpretation of their forms, reports, and data to other SGI departments/services.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS- Knowledge of the operation, repair, maintenance, and market and repair costs of commercial machinery, in positions where required.- Advanced knowledge of the auto body/recreations unit (R.V. unit) and aluminum repair trade, in positions where required.- Knowledge of the heavy-duty mechanic trade, in positions where required.- Knowledge of the auto mechanic trade, in positions where required.- Knowledge of automotive parts and their interchangeability, in positions where required.- Knowledge of automotive market and repair costs, in positions where required.- Knowledge of proprietary manufacturer software.- Knowledge of various
