JOB SUMMARY:


The Emergency & Protective Services department is responsible for protecting the health, property, and quality of life in Ottawa through an integrated public safety department encompassing the Ottawa Paramedic Service, Ottawa Fire Services, By-law & Regulatory Services, and Public Safety Services.

The mandate of the Ottawa Paramedic Service includes the delivery of medical care and treatment to all residents and visitors of Ottawa for non-life threatening and life-threatening medical emergencies including heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory and traumatic injuries.

Ninety percent of the Ottawa Paramedic Service staffing includes Paramedics, Communications Officers, and Equipment and Supply Technicians.


An integral member of the Ottawa Paramedic Service team, you are responsible for operationalizing the Service's Wellness Strategy, defining, driving forwards and managing psychological wellbeing programs and services, and providing immediate clinical assessments, psychological intervention/services, and staff training programs.

As a registered and licensed Psychologist, you lead the consultation, planning, development, and implementation of evidence-based or evidence-informed strategies, programs, initiatives, and supports to promote the psychological health and wellness of staff.


Programs and services include:

  • Mental Wellbeing Response Team (MWRT): to provide suitability assessments of staff as part of the MWRT recruitment process. To provide ongoing mental health support to members of the MWRT. Paramedics working on the MWRT respond to 911 calls for assistance where mental health or substance use health issues are contributing factors.
  • The Ottawa Paramedic Service Peer Support Program: includes 50 peer supporters who are available 24/7 to provide staff with emotional support for work and life stressors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

A Ph.
D. in Clinical Psychology, or a recognized equivalent, from an accredited university.
Completion of a CPA/APA accredited internship/residency in clinical psychology (or equivalent).


CERTIFICATIONS/LICENCES
Registration in good standing as a psychologist authorized for autonomous practice by the College of Psychologists of Ontario. Authorized area of practice in Clinical Psychology is essential.
Authorized client population with adults is essential. Competency with older adults, family and/or couples an asset.

Valid Class G Driver's License and/or ability to travel as required.


KNOWLEDGE:


  • Principles, practices, procedures, techniques, laws and regulations pertaining to the Service's functions, programs, services and operations.
  • Knowledge of health care and public health systems.
  • Knowledge of effective health promotion strategies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of evidencebased therapies for trauma
- and stress-related disorders, such as prolonged exposure therapy, cognitive processing therapy, and/or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, is essential.

  • Knowledge of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and Long-Term Disability processes to support the recovery of employees is an asset.
  • Must be familiar with applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the work place, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures.

  • Ability to work independently and function with mínimal supervision, demonstrating initiative, analytical skills, leadership, superior judgement and decisionmaking ability.
  • Evidence of independent research skills including literature syntheses, project design and development, data analytic skills, and diverse knowledge translation skills, such as would be demonstrated by having substantively contributed as lead
- or co-author on one or more peer-reviewed research articles.

  • Ability to work outside of regular business hours in emergency circumstances.
