The VFPA legal department is searching for a lawyer with 3-5 years of general corporate and real estate experience to join our team.
The Counsel role will include drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts, managing real estate and corporate transactions, and advising on other matters typical in a general in-house solicitor practice.
The Legal Counsel will:
- Provides technical legal services, including negotiating legal rights and obligations on behalf of the VFPA, drafting contracts and other documents, and supporting the VFPA in legal and administrative proceedings. Will work closely with Senior Legal Counsel on files and proceedings.
- Counsels the VFPA in the protection of its assets and its people.
- Makes recommendations as to the VFPA's policies, practices and proposed courses of action, having regard to the legal and practical consequences.
- Advises the VFPA on matters of statutory interpretation, their affect on its assets, people and liabilities.
- Advises the VFPA on the current state of the law and on its rights and obligations.
- Advises the VFPA on trends and new developments in the law that are of interest or concern.
- Assists with the Legal Services business planning process and operating budget preparation and administration. Ensures that budgetary procedures are followed.
- Participate in health and safety initiatives and comply with established policy, procedures and guidelines to protect yourself and your work colleagues.
- Report concerns, hazards, risks and incidents to management for followup.
- Supports organizational initiatives and values by attending VFPA activities and participating on crossfunctional teams, as requested.
SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
- Excellent people and communication skills
- Ability to give practical advice having regard to the objectives of the VFPA and complexities of its mandate.
- Must be a selfstarter who is comfortable managing a breadth of responsibilities.
- Ability to evaluate and understand long term impact of decisions.
- Ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships internally and externally.
- Positive attitude and desire to join a small team.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Law Degree from a recognized university.
- Must be eligible for membership in the Law Society of B.C.
- Must have a minimum of three years solicitor's experience in a law firm or corporate legal department, along with excellent communication and public speaking skills.
- General corporate and real estate experience is required, and experience in Indigenous and/or environmental law would be an asset.

Marine Transportation Security Clearance
The incumbent must obtain and maintain a valid Marine Transportation Security Clearance as this position is required to access restricted areas/information as defined by the Marine Transportation Security Regulations.
