  • We have some big ambitions to continue to evolve our culture and employee experience at Travelers Canada and to help us achieve these, we're looking for an Assistant Vice President (AVP), HR to join our team.


You will act as a strategic HR business partner to critical functional areas through the development and execution of HR programs, policies, and solutions that help enhance business outcomes and individual contributions.

Your thought leadership and consultative skills will enable you to provide leadership and strategic consulting to managers on the most complex HR challenges.


You will also take leadership in driving forward critical initiatives that enable us to enhance the employee experience and utilize your people leadership skills to manage junior members of the HR Business Partner team.


Development and execution of HR Programs:

Compensation:

  • Consult and advise business partners on effective compensation program and decisions at the unit and individual level.
  • Ensure the communication and execution of 'pay for performance' and other aspects of our compensation philosophy.

Organization Effectiveness:

  • Maintain business partnership by participating in the business planning and management process and implementing strategies to support major initiatives.
  • Implement appropriate change management, manager assimilation, team building and related tools and processes. Assimilate key talent into the organization.
  • Assist with the needs assessment and determination of management and leadership training for business areas.

Performance Management:

  • Ensure work environments and workplace practices promote a positive employee relations environment free of discrimination, harassment, or any form of unfair or unethical practice.
  • Provide leaders with collaborative consultation on sensitive or complex employee relations issues. Conduct investigations if needed that ensure objective evaluation and resolution of issues.
  • Review and monitor performance management process to ensure quality, timeliness, and effectiveness for business.
  • Provide training and consulting in effective employee performance management practices.

Employee Development/Talent Management:

  • Continuously assess the business areas talent pool and competencies/readiness to execute our 'right person, right job, right time' strategy.
  • Ensure the identification and execution of business areas' strategies to empower and develop 'key' talent.
  • Provide support to leaders in developing an inclusive environment where all employees can reach their full potential.
  • Influence the use of tools such as skills assessment/gap analysis to better understand organizational talent.

Staffing and Recruitment:

  • Assist business leaders in job design and/or facilitate the identification of core competencies and skill requirements to ensure consistency and currency.
  • Identify staffing trends across business organization to assist leaders in addressing appropriate issues.

Strategic HR Leadership:
Partner with the VP, HR and existing AVP, HR to:

  • Define and execute the Canada HR strategy.
  • Represent the HR function and support the Canadian Senior Leadership Team and President & CEO.
  • Lead HR decisions and approvals in absence of VP, HR.


Lead the development and execution of major projects and initiatives to enable achievement of the Travelers Canada priorities including providing an exceptional employee experience.


Leadership and development of HR team members:

  • Provide supervision and management support to HR team members. Direct and oversee the performance and execution of their HR related activities.
  • Facilitate development opportunities.
  • Serve as a confidante, resource and sounding board to the team.
  • Provide appropriate feedback and coaching to team on their style, approach, and effectiveness.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of eight years related work experience, with experience in a generalist role.
  • Broad knowledge of human resources including organization development, employee relations, performance management, compensation and talent acquisition.
Education, Work Experience, & Knowledge

  • Ten or more years of experience in human resources with majority of experience in a generalist position.
  • Ability to lead and drive execution in a complex and changing environment.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build relationships and successfully engage, interact, and collaborate with all levels of the organization.
  • Curious with the ability to think creatively and innovatively.
