Job Summary
The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) is a multi-disciplinary team that includes clinicians, scientists, researchers, epidemiologists, statisticians, research coordinators, database managers and developers.
The BCCDC is a world-leader in infectious disease research and is playing a leading role in B.C.'s COVID-19 pandemic response.
The UBC Centre for Disease Control (UBC CDC) supports academic research activities of UBC-affiliated researchers based at BCCDC.
The Science and Grant Writer (SGW) will be responsible for developing, writing, publishing and editing scientific papers and grants along with a wide variety of research-related documents within the UBC CDC, that stem from COVID-19 research.
This position reports to the Principal Investigators of the study, primarily UBC-affiliated BCCDC Public Health Laboratory staff.
The SGW will also interact with other members of the Centre, and co-investigators and collaborators from other departments within the University of British Columbia.
The SGW may also interact with other local, national and international collaborators.Work Performed
- Identifying, developing, preparing and managing academic manuscripts for publication;
- Responsible for editing ethic submissions as related to publication needs;
- Responsible for the writing of research grant proposals, academic proposals and letters of intent;
- Writing, editing and providing editorial review feedback on scientific and technical documents, grant proposals, letters of intent and other scientific documents based on communications with authors, editorial boards, staff, internal reviewers and other sources of feedback;
- Responsible to liaise between investigators, authors, staff, trainees, editorial board and publishing staff to assist in translating research initiatives, concepts and results into written documentation and disseminating information;
- Responsible for developing a timeline and framework for publication and grant deadlines;
- Managing, collecting, and coordinating relevant grant information, research budgets, statistics and curriculum vitae;
- Act as a liaison to research fellows, assistants and students for writing and writing related tasks when requested;
- Performing other related duties, as required
The SGW is required to undertake and summarize COVID-19 pandemic response research findings for peer-reviewed journals in an ethical manner following approved guidelines.
Errors made could compromise the results of research projects, and therefore impact the credibility of the investigators and the BCCDC.
As data and results may be disseminated to other research partners, their results, credibility and ability to secure more funding can be negatively influenced.
These findings will shape other jurisdictions responses and research direction which could have a significant public health impact.Supervision Received

The SGW will provide direction and technical knowledge to staff, students, and research fellows, as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
- A PhD degree in biology, medical, or health science area is preferred.
