Monday - Friday, split shifts 7:00 am - 11:00 am and 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm - Subject to Change

The Custodian maintains a clean, tidy, and safe environment for all students and staff at the school. The primary objective of this role is to perform custodial duties, minor maintenance, security checks, and other related duties. As a member of the school team, the Custodian builds positive relationships with staff and students.


Key Responsibilities:

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Skeetchestn Indian Band policies, practices, and procedures as directed by the Principal.

Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to students, members, employees, and general matters of SIB.


Custodial and General Duties

• Cleans, mops, and vacuums offices, classrooms, and public areas including washrooms, gym, and recreational areas. Strips, washes, and waxes floors as required.
• Sanitizes all high traffic and touch surfaces.
• Collects and takes out the garbage. Organizes recycling and gets students involved in this activity. When applicable.
• Sets up and takes down tables, chairs, and additional equipment as required.
• Maintains an adequate supply of cleaning materials and supplies, both in stock and on hand, and ensures supply storage areas are secure, including having cleaning supplies and materials stored in a safe and orderly manner. Orders supplies from ICS when supplies are nearing empty.
• Cleans windows inside and outside as required.
• Fills washroom dispensers, i.e. toilet paper, soap, and towels.
• Performs minor maintenance duties and reports maintenance/repairs needed to the Principal so that assistance from SIB Public Works Department can be requested.
• Ensures the school premises are clean and organized.
• Ensures cleaning supplies/chemicals are kept in a secure/locked location.
• Monitors the environment daily for potential hazards, and takes preventative action as required.
• Creates and follows a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly cleaning schedule.
• Assists with special activities in the classroom as requested

Health and Safety

• Follows guidelines relating to health and safety and reportable incidents.
• Maintains WHMIS requirements for product labelling.
• Monitors the environment daily for potential hazards, takes preventative action as required, and reports all concerns to the Principal.
• Similar to all staff, the Custodian will always monitor the safety of children while on school property.

Qualifications:


Training, Education, Experience:

• Completion of Grade 10 with Grade 12 preferred.
• Experience in custodial work.
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector).
• First Aid/CPR certification.
• WHIMS certification.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

• Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products, and equipment.
• Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
• Ability to follow all sanitation procedures.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. safely and without assistance. Ability to stoop, bend, reach, and stand for prolonged periods.
• Ability to effectively communicate and engage with children; ability to quickly build rapport and trust.
• Dependable and reliable.
• Basic computer skills including MS Office.
• Able to work independently with mínimal daytoday supervision as well as working as part of a collaborative team.
• Genuine respect for Skeetchestn Indian Band culture and protocols.
