Overview:


The Building Service Person - Mason is assigned to the maintenance and construction of bricked and concrete block walls and surfaces and to provide trade, job instruction, and work direction to lower classification and others as required.


University of Waterloo infrastructure comprises over eight million square feet of space powered by a large 1st Class Central Power plant feeding a sophisticated district energy system connecting over eighty major academic buildings supporting state-of-the-art teaching and ground-breaking research.


Responsibilities will align with the Plant Operations goal of contributing towards providing a safe and accessible, invitingly clean and comfortable, functionally-enriched and well-maintained campus environment through service excellence.


Responsibilities:


Operations
Performs assigned work within assigned facilities, including but not limited to:

  • Construction of new walls or surfaces with brick, ceramic tiles, concrete block, or concrete
  • Where required, complete various repairs to existing structures, either masonry units or concrete, including but not limited to rejoining[JH1] walls, repairing catch basins, and replacing tile
  • Complete and/or lead others in any required repairs documented during the Preventative maintenance process
  • May assist with the sourcing and requisitioning of materials, supplies, tools, and support equipment/services.
  • Documenting all maintenance and inspection activities as directed by the Supervisor
  • This position provides trade and job instruction as well as work direction for other classifications. May coordinate work among different classifications as required

Installations

  • Assists with design aspects of new installations or repairs to assure safety, functionality, and compatibility with the existing building envelope
  • Assists with coordination of work of external suppliers as requested

Customer Service

  • Provides excellent customer service through courteous and professional interactions with clients, coworkers, and the campus community
  • Responds to work orders and discretionary work assignments requested by academic and administrative support unit
  • Performs work in an organized manner to minimize client impact

Health & Safety

  • In consideration of the University's commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all faculty, support staff, students, and visitors, responsible for ensuring University facilities and departmental activities are compliant with all applicable legislation, regulations, codes, and standards related to facilities operations as well as occupational health and environmental safety
  • Active in health and safety and incident prevention by adhering to departmental policy, procedures, and safe work practices required by the University health, safety, and environment management system (HSEMS), and in accordance with relevant health and safety legislation, developing and enhancing a safety culture among support staff

Other

  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned and supports departmental activities, including performing work of other classifications within the scope of trade practice, level of incumbent's capability/ competency/ skills, and/ or regulatory requirements
  • May perform work of a lower classification/ pay band
  • Works cooperatively with other trades, service providers, and contractors
  • Assists with addressing stewardship responsibilities and promoting the longterm sustainability of facilities and infrastructure, maximizing opportunities for efficient delivery of services

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.
  • Brick and Stone Mason (401A) Certificate of Qualification (or) Cement (Concrete) Finisher (244G) Certificate of Qualification
  • Minimum of five (5) years of recent experience as a Mason or Cement (Concrete) Finisher
  • Work experience within a major institutional sector(s), such as education, postsecondary education, medical/ hospital, or related construction industry, may be preferred
  • Must have sound knowledge of brick, block, and concrete construction and associated maintenance
  • Understanding of job safety procedures and the ability to properly use required PPE
  • Must have the ability to direct the work of others and provide training as required
  • Customer and teamoriented, as well as selfmotivated, and able to work successfully with mínimal supervision
  • Must have sound mathematical skills and the ability to read and interpret construction drawings/specifications, make accurate material takeoffs and estimates, and write summary reports of condition assessment surveys when necessary
  • Good communication, organizational, interpersonal skills, and computer literacy is required
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Ontario class 'G' driver's license
  • Familiarity with Archibus is considered an asset
