Job Summary

The position provides sampling, data analysis, interpretation and reporting, and technical support to the Hartland Environmental program and Environmental Contaminants program.

This position also undertakes duties associated with other scientific and technical projects within Environmental Services.


Qualifications

  • Degree in science with a focus in environment with 5 years of directly related experience, or a twoyear technical diploma in chemistry, biology, environmental technology or related discipline with 8 years' directly related experience.
  • Must possess a valid BC Driver's Licence.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
People working in this role can expect to be responsible for performing the following duties.

This list is not meant to be comprehensive and other related duties similar in scope and complexity may be performed.


  • Assists in design and implementation of sampling programs for groundwater, surface water, leachate and landfill gas monitoring.
  • Compiles sampling data, completes analysis and interpretation of the data and prepares technical reports presenting methods, results and recommendations for Hartland Environmental program and the Environmental Contaminants program.
  • Compiles and oversees large and complex data sets in spreadsheet and database format and analyses time series and spatial trends using graphic and tabular formats.
  • Interprets data and prepares reports.
  • Liaises with CRD contract laboratory to ensure appropriate analytical methodology and quality assurance/quality control procedures are followed in sample analysis and reporting and reviews analytical reports for accuracy and precision.
  • Coordinates with sampling technicians to prepare and manage documentation on sample methodology and procedures.
  • Assists other environmental monitoring programs, as required.
  • Follows all policies, procedures and standards of the CRD
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer service skills are required
  • Technical experience in sampling and analytical methodologies related to groundwater, surface water, landfill leachate, and industrial, commercial or municipal liquid and solid waste streams
  • Extensive experience in biological/chemical sampling, preservation, analytical and quality control / assurance procedures for common biological and chemical parameters and experience in obtaining services from analytical laboratories, data verification, preparation of detailed field logs and interpretative data reports
  • Experience assisting in the development and implementation of field sampling projects and familiarity with the setup, operation and maintenance of manual and automated field sampling equipment, such as pumps, composite samplers, inline meters, pH, conductivity meters and data loggers
  • Experience with large complex data sets, evaluating and interpreting data for time series and spatial variations, and developing technical reports
  • Experience evaluating and interpreting data and writing technical reports detailing the methods, findings and recommendations of the sampling program
  • Knowledge of and ability to use various computer word processing, spreadsheet and project scheduling programs and databases.
  • Welldeveloped organization skills and ability to work within a team environment, prioritize work, produce clear and concise technical reports and use sound judgement to produce results with a minimum of supervision.

Bachelor's degree
