POSITION OVERVIEW:


The Health & Safety Officer plays a key role in the creation and implementation of a safety culture consistent with the VNI Occupational Health & Safety Policy and CARE value.

The Health & Safety Officer will create a safe work environment and maintain safe work practices by ensuring compliance with corporate, industry, and regulatory safety standards; developing and implementing safety policies, processes and practices; identifying and initiating required safety training; ensuring adherence to OSSE policies, processes and practices; and supporting managers on health and safety issues.


The position participates as a key member of the company health and safety committee, provides guidance to first aid attendants, completes accident investigations, liaises with WorkSafeBC, and works with human resources on return-to-work situations.

The position will also contribute to the development of other corporate wide programs related to employee health and safety i.e., Fire Protection, Earthquake Preparedness.

PURPOSE:

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS

  • Develop, in consultation with the Plant Manager, a companywide safety program that meets OSSE requirements for COR certification and other regulatory requirements related to employee health and safety.
  • Ensure system components are consistent with VNI Occupational Health & Safety Policy and CARE value.
  • Liaise with external agencies (WorkSafe, Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC in the completion of the annual audit and the development of an action plan based on recommendations identified in the audit.
  • Assist in the development, tracking, and monitoring of the Health & Safety annual business plan and budget.
  • Establishes safety metrics, maintains detailed and accurate safety records, measures and reports results.
  • Provide advice, guidance and coaching to the health and safety committee, managers, supervisors, and staff on a variety of safety issues especially those related to occupational safety policy and practices, issues, and decisions related to regulatory requirements.
  • Take a lead role in organizing and maintaining the Health & Safety Committee and first aid attendants group consistent with regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor adherence by employees and subcontractors to the company safety program, including all policies and processes.
  • Coordinate inspections, investigations, and occupational safety activities with departments. Ensure safety requirements, identified in inspections, are completed.
  • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate safety orientation training for new employees.
  • Coordinate and facilitate safety training for existing employees.
  • Ensure the timely completion of accident/injury investigations; direct and renew the analysis of accident and injury data, identifying the need for new or modified occupational safety programs. Ensure actions identified are followed through on.

COMPETENCIES (Knowledge, Skills, Ability)

  • Up to date knowledge of BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation including Duty to Accommodate, Employment Equity Act, Human Rights legislation, and Workers' Compensation Board.
  • Takes initiative to improve health and safety practices and processes.
  • Ability to drive results but also possesses the ability to lead supervisors, and employees to buy into new safety initiatives and approaches.
  • Working knowledge of company operations, structure, and positions in order to integrate understanding into health and safety planning and initiatives.
  • Ability to determine and follow priorities, can multitask
  • Problem solver with solid analytical skills and the ability to trouble shoot as the need arises.
