Job Summary
A Brief Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Operations & Facilities for the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science with additional accountability to Student Affairs delegate for matters relating to Student Affairs departments located in the building, The incumbent is responsible for the planning, operation and maintenance of facilities at the new state-of-the
- art Mitchell Hall. The Manager will work closely with all building occupants to promote effective operations among all stakeholders by establishing structures and processes that meet the needs of various occupants. The incumbent will assist building occupants and other stakeholders with organizing and coordinating special events. This includes, but is not limited to notification and coordination of events in common spaces to ensure there is mínimal impact to business operations for building occupants; building lighting, access control, signage, DIN/wayfinding, logistics, etc.


As the Safety Officer, the incumbent is responsible for safety programs and meeting the requirements of the Queen's University environmental health and safety management system, and the environmental health and safety legislation and standards applicable to building operations.

The incumbent works closely with building occupants and Physical Plant Services to manage capital projects which alter or renovate buildings and systems, administers service contracts with external companies and coordinates custodial needs.


This is a key role interfacing with all building occupants and users, including faculty, staff, students, campus departments, community groups, etc.

The incumbent also has a significant role in working with external providers, Physical Plant Services (PPS), suppliers and contractors. This position involves a high degree of independent decision-making, responsibility and personal initiative.

This position provides expertise on capital projects that alter or renovate buildings and systems. This position oversees safety and security systems for buildings including surveillance systems, building inspections, and access control. This position monitors and ensures quality control of building maintenance standards. This position provides advice and arranges for equipment repairs, maintenance, and disposal.

This position also performs accounting and general bookkeeping activities including preparing lease and service contracts, and monitors budgets related to facility projects.


The schedule for this position requires the incumbent to work frequent early mornings, evenings and weekends, according to program or area needs.


Job Description:

What you will do
Provides expertise on capital projects that alter or renovate buildings and systems.


Oversees safety and security systems for buildings including surveillance systems, key inventory, building inspections, fire alarm testing, and access control.


Monitors and ensures quality control of building maintenance standards including the development and coordination of preventative maintenance and cleaning activities.

Provides advice on and arranges for equipment repairs, maintenance, and/or disposal for research labs, and administrative and teaching spaces.

Performs accounting and general bookkeeping activities including preparing lease and service contracts, and monitoring budgets related to facility projects.

Develops emergency plans for buildings, including laboratories.

Maintains inventory of moveable assets within the facility.

Acts as liaison for occupants and campus partners regarding building issues.
Provides first-line technical support for audio/visual technology within the facility.

Oversees the selection, scheduling, and training of casual staff, and all responsibilities/duties for the operation of the desk.

Serves on committees and working groups.

Conducts regular building inspections and fire alarm testing.

Organizes the receiving and shipping of hazardous materials, oversized items, and high-value/sensitive/fragile equipment.

Provides advice and arranges for equipment repairs, maintenance, or disposal for research labs and administrative and teaching spaces.

Organizes planning, documentation, and execution of emergency plans for the building, including laboratories.

Oversees DIN/wayfinding system including developing service standards, coordinating access to these systems, and validating the system content.

Organizes the receiving and shipping of hazardous materials, oversized items, and equipment.

Other duties as required in support of the department
