DEPUTY CBO/PLAN EXAMINER


In the absence of the Chief Building Official/Chief Plan Examiner (CBO/CPE), acts as the CBO/CPE assuming all technical and supervisory responsibilities.

The Deputy CBO/Plan Examiner provides day-to-day training, oversights, mentoring and support for the Junior Plan Examiner


Key Accountabilities:

  • Reviews building plans, specifications and confirms calculations of small, large, and complex buildings to ensure compliance with the OBC and related requirements
  • Prepares and maintains records of plans, plan reviews, inspections, correspondence, and reports
  • Advises staff, property owners, developers, contractors, engineers and architects regarding technical questions, Bylaws and OBC interpretations, establishing, and maintaining positive relationships with all stakeholders
  • Schedules necessary inspections and ensures that all inspection results are accurately recorded and completes building inspections as needed in accordance with statutory duties and obligations
  • Meets on site with developers and/or designers to observe and discuss construction difficulties and offer solutions
  • Oversees the duties of Junior Plan Examiner, provide training, mentorship, advice and assistance in plan review and code interpretation
  • In the absence of the CBO/CPE perform the duties of the CBO/CPE

Key Qualifications:

  • Architecture or Engineering Degree or year College Diploma (Technical)
  • Civil Engineering/Architectural Technologist
  • Must possess certification with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing Ontario Building Code qualification requirements in all categories (except for Part 8 (onsite sewage)).
  • Must possess qualification with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing Legal
  • Powers and Duties of CBO.
  • 3 years of experience as a Building Inspector I or II or a combination of both.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction methods and techniques for all types of buildings including the ability to read and accurately interpret plans and specifications of any complexity and to compare them with construction in progress.
  • Ability to enforce regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality in field inspection work
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department employees, other departments, architects, engineers, contractors, builders and the general public

Hours of work:8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday (35 hours/week)
