    Maintenance Technician II


    Summary:
    This regular full-time position, reporting to the Public Works Working Foreman performs a variety of manual construction and maintenance related tasks and operates a wide range of municipal equipment as and when required. Most tasks involve year-round outside work in all types of weather, dirt, noise, noxious odors, sewage and excavations. Independent judgment is required to devise appropriate procedures and solve problems.

    The Maintenance II must have sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination to perform heavy physical labour with the ability to lift, push and pull heavy objects, walk or stand continuously with frequent bending or twisting and the ability to work close to moving machinery and in high traffic areas.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Safe operation and maintenance of machinery, vehicles, power tools and equipment including, but not limited to backhoe, single-axle dump truck, side by side atv, tamper, plate packer, lawn mower, ride on lawn mower, weed eater, cement mixer, tar bucket, jackhammer, sander, circular saws, drills, chainsaws, oxyacetylene cutting and other tools
  • Maintenance, repair and operation of the District of Lantzville Water Distribution system including but not limited to meter reading, reservoir maintenance, water main flushing and hydrant maintenance
  • Maintenance, repair and operation of the District of Lantzville Wastewater Collection system including but not limited to monitoring and inspection, lift station maintenance and wastewater collection main flushing
  • Maintenance and repair of the District of Lantzville drainage infrastructure including but not limited to weed eating, brush clearing, construction of headwalls and installation of culverts
  • Building of minor infrastructure such as catch basins, manholes, foot bridges, etc.
  • Street sign maintenance, pothole repair, sightline improvements and road shouldering
  • Inspection, maintenance and reporting of all equipment for damage, fluid/fuel levels, electrical systems, tire checks, etc. and report any defects to the Public Works Working Foreman
  • Other duties such as but not limited to animal carcass removal and roadside litter pickup
  • Rotational on-call shift work must be within 30-minute response time
  • Emergency call outs as required
    Qualifications:
  • Completion of grade 12 or equivalent
  • A valid BC Driver's License, minimum Class 5
  • EOCP Water Distribution 2 Certification or higher
  • EOCP Wastewater Collection 1 Certification or higher
  • Chlorine Handling or Hypochlorination Certificate
  • Traffic Control Person Certificate
  • Experience safely operating and maintaining a backhoe, skid steer and mini excavator
  • Experience and knowledge of multiple trades
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to understand plans and sketches
  • Sound knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials and tools used in civil construction and/or public works related municipal maintenance work
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public, contractors and coworkers
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and maintain records as required
  • Ability to safely operate equipment and tools used in work performed relating to civil construction and municipal maintenance operations
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1
  • Current clean Criminal Record check.
