    DEAF / BLIND INTERVENOR

    The Burnaby School District is currently recruiting for Deaf / Blind Intervenor.

    The Deaf / Blind Intervenor provides support and facilitates communication for students in and out of the classroom and in the community. This includes support such as behaviour management, curriculum implementation, social skills development, personal care, and physical assistance.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Assist deaf/blind students by providing information to help facilitate their participation in the visual/oral world around them

    Assist in planning implementing behaviour management strategies, and monitors and reinforces behaviour

    Reinforce the educational program by tutoring, adapting, or modifying classroom materials to meet the specialized needs of students

    Assist in the planning and acquisition of life and social skills, including work and recreational experiences

    Provide personal care assistance such as toileting, feeding, diapering, and dressing; provides physical assistance such as wheelchair maneuvering, positioning, lifting, and transferring

    Implement Health Care Plan such as administering medication, catheterization, gastro tube or other complex feeding, and monitoring seizure activity, etc.

    Implement educational support programs designed by professionals such as speech language pathologists, rehabilitation therapists, audiologists, orientation & mobility instructors, Braille instructors, etc.

    Prepare written reports such as daily or weekly journals; prepares classroom materials such as booklets, flip charts and flash cards; provide input to the IEP process and performs record keeping functions

    Job Requirements:

    Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent including grammar, spelling, arithmetic, reading, writing and understanding English

    Completion of a recognized program in special needs assistance supplemented by course work in deaf/blind intervention, or one year relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience

    Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language including the ability to adjust to the signing, educational and communication levels required

    Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a full range of students with special needs

    Demonstrated ability to manage behaviour appropriately

    Working knowledge of adaptive/assistive technology related to work performed

    Thorough knowledge of safety procedures related to work performed

    Working Hours: 30 Hours per week

    Hourly Rate: $35.43
