This is an exciting opportunity to join Sheridan College in providing leadership to the Research Finance portfolio within the Generator Support Office.

We are currently seeking a Manager Research Finance, who will be responsible for the efficient and effective leadership for financial-related processes and activities critical to external research, innovation and entrepreneurship (RIE) funding at Sheridan.

Reporting to the Director Research, this position will also work closely with the Manager, Research and Strategic Initiatives, to ensure seamless and effective continuity of support through the course of externally funded RIE grant and contract award and administration.

The position acts as a liaison with research staff, faculty, students, external research partners (industry, community), and external funders regarding research finance issues.


The incumbent also oversees the full operations of the Research finance team and is responsible to ensure exceptional support and service to Sheridan leadership, Finance, and researchers in the oversight and administration of all RIE funds from the point of award through to project end and audit.

They will also provide leadership for financial modeling to support longer-term strategic financial planning for sustaining a strong RIE ecosystem through Generator at Sheridan.


What You'll Be Doing

  • Providing leadership to research finance administration team to enable successful management and administration of >$7M of annual research, innovation and entrepreneurship funding, and manage risk for the college;
  • Providing management of human and financial resources within the Generator Support Office (formerly Research Office) with the Director, to support the successful research administration processes;
  • Optimizing staff and department performance by building professional capacity through effective recruitment, mentoring, and coaching of staff, and ongoing performance management;
  • Providing leadership of strategic finance initiatives by working with other departments to represent and ensure research, innovation and entrepreneurship is considered and reflected in new financial strategic initiatives across the College;
  • Accountable and representative of Generator at Sheridan to collaborate with Sheridan Finance and other stakeholders to ensure research finance needs are considered in college processes and federal/provincial funding body policies, procedures, and compliance, including adherence to Sheridan's legal and policy directives, and updating;
  • Monitoring external research finance trends and practices, maintaining currency in changing grant offerings, including international trends;
  • Performing other related duties and activities required.

  • 4year bachelor's degree in finance, business administration or related field of study. Advanced degree in finance or business is preferred (e.g. MBA or CPA);
  • 5 years of experience in research project/grant financial leadership (equivalency will be considered), preferably within a college environment or other post secondary environment;
  • Understanding of the college research funding landscape and the major external grant funding bodies accessed by colleges;
  • Financial management and accounting skills, including budget development and implementation, financial analysis, forecasting and modelling, reconciliation, reporting, and auditing; knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP);
  • Solid background and experience in computer systems with a high level of proficiency with all PC platforms: (e.g. MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Database Administration).
