    We are looking for a Project Coordinator (Co-op) at our Walker Construction – Niagara location.

    Project Coordinator (Co-op)

    Reporting directly to the Project Superintendent – Emulsions, the incumbent will assist in coordinating Emulsion related operations to ensure projects are completed in a timely, cost-effective manner and comply with health and safety and environmental legislation, policies, and procedures.

    Work Term: May 2024 – August or September 2024 (dependent on schooling)

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Review daily requirements of labour, equipment, and materials with Working Foremen to ensure crews have necessary resources to complete each project in a safe and cost-effective manner; Confirm that all required resources arrive on site and in accordance with project schedule.
    • Ensure, with Working Foremen, that traffic control plans are set up and working, to control and allow smooth flow of traffic.
    • Liaise with engineers, owners, and project supervisors to ensure work is being completed according to plan and reports changes, problems, or delays to the Project Superintendent - Emulsion.
    • Develop Solutions on-site with working foremen, engineers, owners, and Project Supervisor to guarantee a quality product.
    • Read and Interpret Engineering Drawings to correctly construct projects as per design.
    • Ensure health & safety and environmental legislation and permit compliance are adhered to.
    • Report on-site complaints or concerns to the Project Superintendent - Emulsion when necessary, to resolve conflicts and ensure projects are completed with minimal delays.
    • Coordinate sub-contractors and hired trucks with the assistance of Working Foreman, to ensure schedules are adhered to.
    • Provide supervisory support and assistance to a small team, to ensure that work is completed accurately and efficiently according to standard operations, best working practices, and contract specifications.
    • Ensure that project payment quantities are measured, documented, and agreed to by Owner representatives. Provide all pay quantities and extra work authorizations to the Estimator and/or AP/AR Clerk and assists in completing payment certificates
    • Promote innovative road construction methods to clients.
    • Prepare documents and specifications.
    • Provide weekly completed work quantities and present them to the AP/AR Clerk to ensure accurate monthly job cost reporting.
    • Update construction schedule weekly, utilizing scheduling software and providing same to Project Superintendent – Emulsion, Estimator and Division Manager.
    • Other duties, as assigned, by the Project Superintendent.

    This position requires a demonstrated degree of initiative and judgment to organize, prioritize and coordinate daily tasks. Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are required in dealing with colleagues in everyday working relationships.

    • Demonstrated ability to assist in planning the routine workload of a small team.
    • Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to details, makes sure work is done correctly and thoroughly. Keeps accurate records.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety and environmental regulations and legislation.
    • Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems and conflicts
    • Business acumen - demonstrated understanding of quality standards relative to site supervision and paving standards.
    • Able to work with limited supervision and to take discretionary action as required.
    • Proficient communication skills, both oral and written, to disseminate information with clarity, in one on one, or group situations.
    • Communicates well in writing by composing clear documents; facility with editing and/or proof- reading is required
    • Professional manner, tact, diplomacy, and discretion in dealing with colleagues, engineers, customers, and public.

    Qualifications

    • Currently in school, preferably in Construction/Civil Technology
    • A valid G Registration Ontario Driver's License in good standing is required for this position to drive to job sites and meetings on a daily basis.
    • Proactive – Anticipates and initiates action to meet needs.
    • Adaptable – able to work with diverse personalities and styles.

    Travel Requirements

    The incumbent will be required to travel to job sites during the working day. Projects performed by the Emulsion Division at WCL are throughout Ontario, where overnight travel may be an occasional requirement.

    Typically, this position would require frequent ability to stand or move about. The incumbent would be required to occasionally kneel, reach, stoop, bend, and stretch and carry moderately heavy objects like samples or raw materials as well as light objects consistent with usual office materials such as, paper, files, and other office supplies.

    Working Environment

    Work is generally performed 70% outdoors, with 30% office contract administrative duties. There is frequent exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, heat, cold, traffic and other sensory attributes. The level of noise at any given time is moderate to extreme and may experience frequent interruptions.
