The primary responsibility is to provide writing support in uncontested hearings; however, some contested decision writing may also be required in English and French.

The Associate Decision Editor will also support the work of the Tribunals unit by analyzing legal issues as they arise, and by providing administrative or clerking support before, during, or after hearings as needed.

Language proficiency testing may be administered as part of the recruitment process for this position.


Primary Duties

  • Attend inperson or remote hearings (primarily uncontested hearings, but possibly contested hearings as needed) and take detailed notes
  • Review all hearingsrelated material (e.g. exhibits, jurisprudence, applicable legislation)
  • Work closely with panels and draft decisions, in a timely manner, that clearly articulate their reasons, including a summary of documents considered, witness testimony (as needed) and reference to applicable legislation and cases presented by counsel
  • Proofread and edit decisions and other hearingsrelated documents for grammar, spelling, clarity, and legal and factual accuracy
  • Clerk and/or provide administrative support to panels of the Discipline and Fitness to Practise Committees before, during, or after hearings as needed
  • Prepare internal and external presentations as needed
  • Conduct legal research as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager (Tribunals) and/or the Director (Policy, Governance, and Tribunals)

Qualifications

  • Required membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario or an equivalent body and/or jurisdiction
  • Required bilingualism (French and English): oral, written and comprehension
  • Demonstrable experience in Regulatory or Administrative law
  • Demonstrable experience supporting the work of adjudicators in a legal writing capacity
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to interact with Committee members and staff in a professional manner
  • Proven organizational skills to manage high volumes of work in a timely manner
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Videoconferencing Technology (e.g. Zoom, MS Teams); Meeting Management Software (e.g. eScribe); and File Sharing Technology (e.g. ShareFile)
  • Knowledge and understanding of the education sector, the _Ontario College of Teachers Act_, related legislation, regulations and bylaws
