Parks Maintenance Worker (4 Temporary - up to 4 months)

Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department


Interested in getting your foot in the door at City Parks? We are looking for 4 people to join our team until the end of the year, helping in all aspects of parks maintenance including tree watering, mowing and assisting the horticulture crew with maintenance tasks.

Incumbents may need to work overnight shifts to assist with watering hanging baskets but initially will start on day shifts.


POSITION FUNCTION
Operate a variety of parks related power equipment and vehicles and perform general labouring functions in Parks Operations.


KEY DUTIES


Assist with Parks operations by performing tasks as assigned in horticulture, arboriculture, turf, construction and maintenance such as mowing, trimming, weeding and removing debris; watering grass areas; digging, raking, and removing refuse to assist in the preparation and maintenance of flower and shrub beds; edging and trimming grass along sidewalks and curbs; and cleaning ponds, streams and pathways; clean, remove garbage and maintain playground and rest facilities; assisting with construction and repair of parks furniture, playground equipment, hard infrastructure; assist in park and sportsfield construction and maintenance.


Operate an industrial ride-on mower to cut grass on boulevards parks, medians and playing fields; perform minor pruning; maintain and adjust cut and height of reels and blade; load and unload mower from trailer.

Operate a light truck with trailer.


Operate a light tractor equipped with loader or blade, curb cutter, reel mower, trailer, sickle bar, spray tank, post hole auger and other turf/horticultural attachments; operate light power equipment such as light rollers, light all-terrain utility vehicles, rock drill or breaker, air compressors, concrete mixers or small vibrating tampers as required; operates chainsaw, weedeater, hedge trimmers and other smaller power tools related to basic tree maintenance.


Operate a tank truck along a prescribed route to water boulevard trees, baskets and other garden and landscape areas; remove excess sod and other debris from around the base of trees; remove and replace broken or damaged tree collars.


Fill tanker from fire hydrants, complete form and forward to Waterworks; report any tree damage or pruning required to supervisor; keep records of trees watered and tree collars adjusted or replaced.

Perform pre
- and post-trip inspections by checking items such as fluid levels, belts, hoses and lights; perform minor maintenance such as cleaning and lubrication; report repairs needed and damage to supervisor and mechanic shop; check first aid and safety equipment; fill out daily equipment log, material slips and time sheet.

Perform related duties where qualified.


INDEPENDENCE
Work is performed according to an assigned route and reviewed by supervisor.

Problems such as changes to the route or complaints are referred to supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
Grade 10.

Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.


Experience:

1 year of related experience.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.


Work schedule:
The following shifts are scheduled based on operational requirements - 10:45pm - 7:15am (night shift basket watering) and 7:00am - 3:30pm (day shift) various days, (40 hour work week)


$31.16 per hour, Pay Grade 4
