REPORTING TO:
Manager, Paramedic Education and Development

***: Reporting to the Manager, Paramedic Education and Development, the Practice Specialist is primarily responsible for the design, development, coordination, delivery and evaluation of educational activities for Ornge clinicians.


The Practice Specialist will work alongside the Senior Practice Specialists, Faculty members, Paramedic Practice Mentors, and Clinical Practice Leaders to ensure to ensure the consistent delivery of high quality education to meet the initial, continuing professional development and operational training needs of clinicians at Ornge.


Further, they will be responsible for other Base Hospital (BH) mandated aspects of Paramedic Maintenance of Certification, which includes clinical care evaluation and Continuing Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives, including but not limited to patient chart review/evaluation.

The Practice Specialist will collaborate effectively with members of the Quality team, Service Operators, the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) and external stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of programs.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Design, develop, and deliver initial education programs to support the current and future learning needs of Ornge clinicians, in compliance with accreditation requirements;
  • Design, develop and deliver continuing education programs to meet Operations and Ministry of Health Long Term Care Emergency Services Branch and Ambulance Act requirements;
  • Deliver continuing medical education as a component of the annual maintenance of certification requirements as identified through the Ornge Base Hospital Quality Assurance programs and Medical Advisory Committee;
  • Assess, design, deliver and monitor continuing professional development activities as part of clinician's return to clinical practice and remediation plans;
  • Determination and utilization of various evaluation tools using evidence based/best practice strategies and tools;
  • Contribute to the development of mentorship and trainthetrainer program sessions for clinical staff delivering education, and attend educational sessions as required;
  • Through collaboration with internal and external interdisciplinary Subject Matter Experts, provide innovative instructional concepts and techniques to facilitate clinician learning;
  • Some provincial travel with a flexible work schedule required; and
  • Position involves sitting, standing, walking and lifting as an education facilitator.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Postsecondary education, Bachelor/Master's degree in a relevant field as a Critical Care Paramedic, Registered Nurse (Critical Care/Emergency), or Respiratory Therapy or in a relevant field (i.e. Adult Education); Critical Care Paramedic is preferred;
  • Minimum of 5 years of independent practice in a related health care field (Paramedic, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, CCP);
  • Postsecondary education qualifications, including a Bachelor or Master's degree in a relevant adult education, health professions education, or health sciences discipline preferred;
  • Experience in curriculum design, development and implementation in teaching health professionals and/or developing and facilitation of medical simulation activities; and
  • Minimum of 2 years' educational experience in teaching health professionals.

  • Computer literate with excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • The ability to plan and carry out responsibilities with mínimal supervision, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines;
  • Knowledge of Continuous Quality Improvement processes and experience in reviewing clinical quality of care is an asset;
  • Knowledge of the ambulance system in the Province of Ontario is an asset; and
