  • Pacific Community Resources Society requires a parttime Youth Substance Use Counsellor. The Youth Substance Use Counsellor is a member of our larger Chilliwack Addiction and Prevention program (CAPS), and will provide individual substance use supports, counselling services and referrals to treatment for youth within Chilliwack Secondary School and Sardis Secondary School. This counsellor's home office with be at our Hocking St. location, with most of the work happening in the schools during the school day four days a week. The primary role of the substance use counsellor is to engage in onetoone counselling and provide support and presentations within the schools. As needed, the counsellor may be required to organize and facilitate groups and organize and participate in recreational activities.


This role requires a sound understanding of learning disabilities and other brain-based disabilities (including FASD, ADHD, autism spectrum, brain damage), barriers to support, addictions theory, motivational theory, the effects of abuse and trauma and Indigenous culture.

Creating a safe and therapeutic space is a priority for this position.

  • Responsibilities
  • To provide onetoone counselling and support services, including referrals to treatment
  • Work within Chilliwack Secondary School and Sardis Secondary School four days a week (2 days at each school)
  • To operate and/or cofacilitate groups with school staff or other members of the PCRS youth team.
  • Work as an active member of the CAPS outpatient treatment team
  • Maintain administrative duties and follow PCRS policies and procedures.
  • Qualifications
  • BSW or BA in a related field plus 1 years' experience, or Child and Youth Care or relevant discipline plus 2 years direct experience. Substance use or Addiction Counselling training. A combination of experience and education is considered.
  • Experience working in alcohol and substance use prevention or intervention, familiarity with treatment referrals, and the substance use service continuum.
  • Ability to form strong therapeutic working relationships with youth.
  • Solid understanding of the impacts of colonization on our First Nations people
  • Sound judgement and effective interpersonal skills
  • Clear communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Traumainformed practice and suicide intervention training
  • Ability to create a safe and therapeutic space for youth.
  • Criminal records check including the vulnerable sector.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Valid BC driver's license with business insurance use
  • Use of own vehicle (mileage is paid)
  • Driver's abstract must be submitted.
