The Fish and Wildlife Branch is seeking an energetic, detail oriented and forward-thinking individual to fill a key position as a GIS analyst in the Habitat Unit. This position will work closely with the Terrestrial Ecologist and other team members to assist with data gathering and modelling to support conservation actions in the South of the Divide area of the province.
The primary responsibility of this position will be to improve products that map different habitat and disturbances in the province, including supporting the collection of ground-truthing data. Models will be developed to identify shrubs in the Prairie Ecozone, as well as existing industrial footprint. Other GIS analysis will be performed to identify rare ecosites in the province or to refine existing models. This work will include collaboration with other provincial initiatives like Prairie Landscape Inventory and Habitat Management Plan. It is expected that the GIS modeler will be able to use data visualization tools and techniques to present analysis, effectively communicate information, and inform decision-making.
The GIS analyst will also contribute to the development of data standards and data management protocols for this program; liaise with a wide variety of internal and external clients to facilitate timely and efficient data receipt and acquisition, and assess, analyze, and manage large and comprehensive data sets.
A strong understanding of, and experience working with, Geographic Information Systems and R programming language to conduct spatial, habitat and wildlife statistical-related analyses is required. Experience working with and manipulating Sentinel or Landsat satellite data products is an asset. Experience with image classification in remote sensing is also an asset.
Experience working with an enterprise database such as Oracle and familiarity with other software such as PCI Geomatica and eCognition would be considered assets. Familiarity with grassland/agricultural systems would also be considered an asset. You must be able to communicate complex technical topics to non-technical staff and clients.
Typically, the knowledge for this position would be attained through a four-year degree in Geography, Environmental Studies, Geomatics, Computer Science, or related discipline with courses directly related to GIS. A minimum of two years of work experience using GIS, with an emphasis on using Esri products including ArcGIS Pro, Portal for ArcGIS and ArcGIS online is also typical, although an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may also be considered.
