Nature of the Position


The District of Sechelt is looking for a dedicated, passionate, and skilled applicant for the newly created position of Manager of Community Services.

Under the direction of the Director of Corporate and Community Services, the Manager will be responsible for the leadership of the Community Services department.

This dynamic role will supervise the Parks Foreman, Arts and Culture Coordinator, and the Community Services Coordinator.

The objective of this new role is to provide collaborative parks programming and planning with the coordination and empowerment of the employees within the department, while ensuring the efficiencies of the varying fields of work.

Essential Competencies

  • Planning, coordinating priorities and setting timelines related to current work plans
  • Consideration of District parks, green spaces and urban forests to assist in long term planning and contribution to the Parks and Open Space Master Plan
  • Liaising with community user groups, organizations, and the public
  • Developing and managing budgets
  • Ability to work under pressure with multiple deadlines
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills with confidence, tact and, diplomacy
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a teamoriented environment
  • Skilled in assessment and management of multiple competing priorities, assignments, and tasks
  • Knowledge and skills to evaluate departmental performance through quarterly reporting as well as performance, people management
  • Ability to manage operational and capital projects, ensuring completion according to plans and budgetary restrictions
Preferred Competencies

  • Postsecondary education (degree or diploma) related to parks, recreation, and/or arts and culture
  • A minimum of five years' related experience, including demonstrated supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of municipal bylaws and policies a they relate to the Community Services department
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement while working toward departmental objectives
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and team building skills
  • Horticulture, arboriculture, and field management or landscape architecture education and/or experience
  • Knowledge of the cultural needs, interests, resources, and requirements of the community
  • Experience with facility and event management
  • Experience in public speaking, specifically related to report presentation to elected officials ex. Mayor and Council
Working Conditions
This is an exempt position with a competitive salary and an attractive benefits package is available.

Hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday; however, flexibility is required to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
