Position Summary:


The Operator and Fleet Service member plays a vital role in ensuring the effective operation and maintenance of vehicles and firefighting equipment for the Wolfville Volunteer Fire Department.

This position involves the operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of firefighting apparatus, emergency vehicles, and related firefighting equipment.

The Operator and Fleet Service member reports directly to the Fire Chief and works closely with the fire department's leadership and fellow volunteers to maintain the readiness and reliability of the fleet and equipment.

Additionally, this position is responsible for custodial requirement as needed for the fire station.
Hours of work are generally 8 am - 4 pm, Monday to Friday.


Core Expectations of the Role:


  • Operate and drive firefighting apparatus and emergency vehicles in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to traffic laws and departmental protocols.
  • Flexibility to respond to emergencies and work during evenings, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled inspections of vehicles and equipment to identify any maintenance or repair needs.
  • Communicate any significant maintenance issues or concerns to the Fire Chief or designated supervisor promptly.
  • Assist in minor repairs and troubleshooting of equipment malfunctions, ensuring timely repairs, or arranging for professional assistance when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance activities, repairs, for each vehicle and equipment.
  • Assist in the inventory management of spare parts, tools, and supplies needed for maintenance, repair, and firefighting activities.
  • Work collaboratively with the driver trainers to provide operator training to departments personnel in class and in the field.
  • Maintains the building, and all apparatus to a high standard of cleanliness and properly stocked.
  • Maintains suitable training and licensing certification levels to ensure proper and safe operation of the equipment and the necessary maintenance thereof. (Certification levels must be maintained and is considered mandatory for continued employment.)
  • Responsible for the maintenance, inventory control, and ordering of small equipment and tools for firefighting, and station upkeep.
  • Adheres to all provincial, municipal, and departmental Occupational Health and Safety policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures.
  • IT: ensure that firefighter information is current in Fire Pro including certification(s), education, personal information, and identification number is on fire fighter equipment.
  • Participate in training sessions and fire prevention educational programs.
  • Assist the Chief and department secretary with administrative task as required.
  • Performs custodial duties as outlined in Appendix A.

Education and Experience:


  • Competent in the use of computers and required software.
  • Minimum 5 years in Fireground/Fire Apparatus experience or equivalent
  • Mechanical aptitude within the firefighting industry.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in the operation of all firefighting, rescue, and medical equipment. Level 1 Firefighter would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask in a busy environment.
  • Grade 12 high school certificate or equivalent. Post secondary education in heavy duty equipment repair or equivalent would be considered an asset.
  • Must be at least 18 years old, Nova Scotia Class 3 Driver license, minimum 2 years experience with a clean driving record.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician would be considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Decision Making


Ability to make decisions, in accordance with the Fire Chief on an as-needed basis in overseeing the maintenance and operations of a Fire Station.

The Operator/Fleet Services team member will have input on decisions for long range maintenance planning for the equipment.


General Capabilities:


  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to lift 50lb.

  • Given this is a firefighting environment. Agility and strength to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions.
