Grade 15 ($118,853 to $158,470 per annum)

The University Librarian (UL) provides leadership, and develops goals, and a vision for the Library + Archives, in support of the strategic initiatives of the University.

The UL is responsible for the overall administration, planning, and coordination of the Library + Archives.

They provide direction for a wide array of functions, activities and policies that affect the successful activation, implementation and utilization of collections, services, facilities, and technology within the Library + Archives.- The UL is responsible for the supervision and evaluation of Library + Archives team members, in a unionized environment, and supports, advises, and mentors library supervisors.- This leadership role also holds responsibility as the University Copyright Officer and guides the creation and implementation of copyright policy and procedures while also providing copyright education for students, faculty, and staff.- The UL plays a significant part in the integration and representation of the Library + Archives within the Emily Carr community, the library community, and the creative and cultural community.

The UL assumes a senior administrative position reporting directly to the Vice-President, Academic + Provost.

Collaborative leadership with other senior administrators across diverse service and academic areas is integral to the success of the office of the University Librarian.

Some Typical Duties Include:


  • Provide strategic leadership and management to the Library + Archives in the planning, coordination, policy development and evaluation of all Library services and foster strong collaborations and partnerships across campus.
  • Effectively lead and manage the hiring, ongoing professional development, training, supervision, evaluation, discipline, dismissal and grievance procedures and collective agreement administration for librarians and staff. Ensure successful daytoday operation of the Library through effective deployment, supervision, engagement, and team building of librarians and staff.
  • Act as primary University contact for external copyright organizations, including copyright collectives and licensing agencies.
  • Manage the development and communication of copyright policies and procedures for the University.
  • Work with relevant areas and departments across the University to deliver coordinated copyright information to staff, faculty, and students.
  • Develop and administer the Library + Archives financial plan including the annual budget, resource allocation, expenditures and record keeping.
  • With the librarians, develop an active program of library and research skills instruction for students and faculty. May also present lectures on library use and research methods as required.
  • Ensure that the Library + Archives and related resources are effectively with programs and studentcentered areas, including the Aboriginal Gathering Place.
  • Promote collegial and participatory interaction, and fosters communication, between Library + Archives employees and with other University units.
  • Serve on various University committees, including the University Senate, ensuring representation of and advocacy for the Library + Archives services, resources, and personnel within the Emily Carr community.
  • Participate in related external organizations and establishes external collaborations with other postsecondary institutions to enhance patron service and resources; enhances the University's profile and community participation through partnerships, association membership and other activities in the external committees.
