Director, Professional Development and National Sections (DPDNS)

Position Summary**Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Director, Professional Development and National Sections (DPDNS) is responsible for the overall day-to-day operations of the Sections & Professional Development department and overall strategy and delivery of Professional Development (PD) at the CBA. The DPDNS oversees strategic engagement with National Sections, orientation, and onboarding of executive committee members in addition to the overall development, delivery, and effective operation of the National PD curriculum covering both substantive legal programs and law practice matters in accordance with CBA policy, objectives, and guidelines. In the performance of their duties, the DPDNS will interact, at all levels and to varying degrees, with a broad range of actual and potential stakeholders including CBA Executive and staff, Branches, CCCA, CBA members, National Sections, the public, various levels of government, sponsors, and outside suppliers. This is a critical executive role requiring excellent hands-on leadership, interpersonal skills, communication, and business skills, the ability to manage teams, and the ability to work effectively at both a strategic and operational level.

Annual Salary
$130,000 - $140,000 per year


Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct departmental oversight and governance related to strategic planning, member engagement, and departmental training and development
  • Lead and manage crossfunctional teams to implement National PD and Sections strategy, policies, programs and services
  • Oversee and support governancerelated work of National Sections and facilitate collaboration with the Board
  • Oversee and support the Sections Subcommittee as a Board Committee
  • Assist with National Section elections and provide analysis and recommendations as needed
  • Ensure corporate alignment and crossdepartmental collaboration related to PD
  • Lead departmental and contribute to corporate planning and budgeting processes
  • Lead and implement special projects, research, and analysis assigned by the CEO, as required
  • Develop and implement the CBA National PD program (conferences and webinars) and strategic plan
  • Oversee continuous review, analysis and assessment of CBA PD and Section programs, activities and services
  • Direct, lead and oversee the development, execution, and growth of conference programming and conference budgeting process
  • Direct and oversee promotion and marketing strategy in conjunction with crossfunctional departments
  • Build partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to increase PD revenue
  • Liaise with CBA Branches to deconflict PD and Sections programming
  • Develop relationships with other PD providers and law firm PD directors
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB, JD or BCL)
  • Master's degree in Business Administration is considered an asset
  • Eligibility for membership in a Canadian Law Society is considered an asset

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in the practice of law in a legal environment and/or in a similar role in a related Association or business
  • Minimum 8 years' experience managing people, including volunteers
  • Minimum 4 years' experience directing and managing managers
  • Experience in PD development and delivery
  • Experience in change management
  • Experience in full cycle budget planning
  • Experience working in a nonprofit and/or memberbased association is considered an asset
  • Experience in professional legal training accreditation is considered an asset

  • Strong ability to conduct business case analysis of professional development offerings
  • Strong ability to understand and respond to developing and current technologies and their potential use in continuous professional development, online learning, and inperson national conferences
  • Ability to work overtime and travel as circumstances warrant
