    Position Title: Labour Relations Lawyer

    The New Brunswick Association of Nursing Homes is an organization that provides services to and advocates on behalf of New Brunswick's 75 nursing homes. Across the Province nursing homes employ over 6000 people, many of whom are union members who fall under one of 6 collective agreements. Labour and employment support is among the core services NBANH provides to its members. NBANH is seeking a person who is passionate about working in a socially conscious space and interested in being challenged to find practical solutions to a wide range of challenges. Although a significant portion of this role is to provide Labour and employment services, there is opportunity to meet other needs of the organization around ethics in care provision, management education and training, and policy/legislative review and advocacy. NBANH is looking for the right person and is willing to mold a role to meet that person's strengths.

    Role:

    The Labour Relations Lawyer reports to the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible to provide Labour relations services to NBANH members. This role works with other members of the NBANH legal team to provide interpretation of collective agreements for managers, lead or assist with collective agreement negotiations, represent member homes at grievance arbitrations, Workers' Compensation Appeals Tribunal and Labour and Employment Board hearings. The individual in this role will also provide additional services consistent with expertise level. This role is a leadership role in the long term care sector that requires flexibility and must maintain a general knowledge base on all NBANH initiatives and sector developments in such a way as expected of an in-house resource.

    Summary of Position:

    • Provide interpretation of existing collective agreements for managers;
    • Be a resource for managers of member homes with respect to labour and employment matters or matters tangential to labour and employment;
    • Negotiate Collective Agreements as lead or in support;
    • Participates in relevant committees;
    • Develops reports, gives presentations and educational sessions as needed;
    • Conduct legal research and provide legal opinions as needed to member homes, or internally with NBANH;
    • Occasional travel throughout New Brunswick is required.

    Qualifications:

    • Excellent communication skills in English. French communication skills is essential;
    • Excellent problem solving skills;
    • Law degree from a recognized Canadian law School. Experience in Labour and Employment Law would be an asset;
    • Eligible for membership in the NB Law Society;
    • Creative problem solving skills;
    • Highly organized individual with strong attention to detail;
    • Excellent writing skills;
    • Committed to supporting aging and long term care through public policy advocacy and working with organized labour to create positive change.
