Department, Unit or Project Description:


McMaster Nuclear Operations and Facilities (NOF) Technical Services (TS) Group provides engineering and technological support to the users of the various nuclear facilities at McMaster University.

These consist of McMaster Nuclear Reactor (MNR), McMaster University Cyclotron Facility (MUCF), McMaster Accelerator Lab (MAL), Center for Advanced Nuclear Materials (CANS), and High-Level Lab Facility (HLLF); as well as other external stakeholder groups such as Health Physics.

It also provides support to research groups and external agencies as required.


Job Summary:


The Technical Services group is seeking a Nuclear Engineering Lab Assistant Co-Op to help set-up and execute several improvement and development projects.

Projects are varied depending on the needs of the client, but some recent examples of projects that co-op students have been involved in are:


  • Mechanical design of novel radioisotope production systems, production of fabrication drawings, and execution of commissioning tasks. The resulting device will be installed in the McMaster Nuclear Reactor core for production of medical isotopes.
  • Commissioning of a smallscale fusion device for neutron production, integrating this into the facility's safety interlock systems, production of commissioning reports for compliance with Federal nuclear safety codes.
  • Development of mechanical test apparatus and remote handling tools to ensure that operator radiation doses are kept As Low As Reasonably Achievable.
  • Development of automated controls and HMI's for already existing irradiation systems that will be used for experiments and the production of liquid radioisotopes in the Cyclotron.

Routine tasks will also be required, such as:

  • Execution of planned maintenance tasks
  • Filling cryogenic dewars with liquid nitrogen
  • Assisting with preparation of spares and consumables used in isotope production
  • General lab housekeeping
  • Modifying off the shelf products to work with our current equipment

Accountabilities:


  • Perform basic, standardized laboratory experiments and SOPs following established protocols.
  • Record and maintain accurate records of experimental and equipment testing results.
  • Assist in the gathering information for preparation of a variety of presentations or reports.
  • Maintain laboratory and reactor facilities and equipment in a safe, clean working order.
  • Seek guidance and direction from research staff, a manager, or health physics.
  • Assist in the design and manufacturing of new custom tooling and instrumentation

Qualifications:


Education:
Currently enrolled in a relevant post-secondary program such as Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronic, Automotive, Automation Engineering/Technology programs, Physics, Chemistry, etc.


Experience:
Prior experience not required.


Assets:


  • Experience with CAD software and 3D design principles (Autodesk and SolidWorks preferred)
  • Experience with additive manufacturing (3D printing)
  • Experience with reductive manufacturing tools (Mills, lathe, drills, etc.) and CNC principles
  • Experience and ability to use hand tools
  • Electricity and Electronics design, analysis, and fabrication
  • Experience with controllers (PLC) and microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi)
  • Experience with programing languages such as Python, Arduino C, PLC ladder logic.
  • Familiar with Piping and Instrumentation drawings (P&ID)
  • Familiar with searching for and interpreting information from Datasheets
  • Can work independently and has demonstrated work ethic
  • Can work in a regulated environment and is willing to work with radioactive materials.
  • Can develop rough experimental outlines and procedures, must also be able to execute them.
  • An interest in nuclear instrumentation
