Flemo Farm Market Garden Assistant


Overview:


Flemo Farm is a Community Engagement and Entrepreneurial Development (CEED) project that has transformed 1/2 acre of grass within the Flemingdon Park hydro corridor into an urban farm.

Flemo Farm has 10 community farmers who are operating micro-farm businesses and FoodShare staff are growing produce that is donated to community members facing food insecurity.

This summer, we are aiming to grow over 8,000 pounds of fresh produce to give away to residents, as well as coordinating the farmers' market located in Flemingdon Park and hosting workshops about food justice, farming, community gardening, and anti-oppression.

This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and requires that the applicants:

  • Be between 15-30 years of age (inclusive)
  • Be Canadian Citizens, permanent residents, or persons on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations

Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Support of garden tasks/activities including seeding, transplanting, weeding, watering, pruning, fertilizing, pest & disease management, harvesting, washing, packaging, and storing.
  • Support Community Engagement activities including creating a welcoming environment for volunteers, mentoring gardening volunteers, leading garden tours, and potentially speaking at events or with the media about the garden as appropriate.
  • Support the maintenance of the pollinator garden and surrounding areas of teh far,
  • Support in outreach activities through social media, building relationships with residents and stakeholders, distributing flyers, and putting up posters, as needed.
  • Support the Farmer's market activities including supplying, setting up and closing down, merchandising, customer service, mentoring and supporting volunteers,
  • Working collaboratively with Farm Coordinators, other FoodShare and staff of partnering organizations to develop educational programming for community members
  • Support the community compost exchange (CCE) activities including promoting, receiving, recording and composting processes
  • Collaborate in the recording and managing of relevant production and marketing data
  • Participating in Flemo Farm and FoodShare staff meetings, all staff training, and reporting requirements such as timesheets and handling other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • At least 1+ year of experience in vegetable gardening, growing food, or working with plants
  • At least 1+ year of experience running a compost system in smallscale or backyard gardening
  • Demonstrated interest in communityled food projects and/or neighbourhoodbased community organizing. Preference youth who live in the Flemingdon Park neighbourhood.
  • Experience working with children, youth, adults, and/or seniors in Flemingdon Park
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of food justice and equity
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a diverse community (people of different ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to be punctual, reliable, and committed to completing tasks
  • Effective communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of food systems, including growing, cooking, and composting, is an asset
  • Photography, videography, and social media skills are an asset

Job Requirements:


  • Must meet Canada Summer Jobs Program requirements, outlined above
  • Willingness to do physical labour outside in all weather conditions (rain or shine)
  • Lifting and moving up to 40 pounds
  • Some evening work may be required (but you'll always know well in advance)
  • Available to work Mondays to Fridays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. On Thursday from 12:00 pm to 7:30 pm as a market day
Please note that the successful applicant will be required to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check. FoodShare will cover the cost of this requirement.


Compensation & Benefits:


Salary:
$24.00/Hour


Benefits:

Vacation in pay (8%), paid days for wellness days & sick days and personal days will be pro-rated based on days worked/contract dates, health benefits reimbursement (prorated) and daily lunch stipend.


Contract Type:
Fixed Term Contract, fixed hours (35 hours per week)

Selection Process:


  • The hiring committee may conduct a second round of interviews, which may include a pre-interview assignment, which would be compensated.
