Trillium Lakelands District School Board requires one (1) Re-Engagement Counselor. This position will commence September 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024. The successful applicant will work within Haliburton and City of Kawartha Lakes.

Position Description:

This is a full-time position associated with the school year calendar.

The Re-Engagement Counselor will interact with relevant stakeholders to provide guidance, assistance, support, and intervention strategies to promote regular and consistent school engagement and attendance.

In this position, the Counselor will explore and intervene in all issues of chronic absenteeism/prolonged absences/U18 for compulsory school aged students.

The School Re-Engagement Counselor collaborates with school administrators, student services, school teams and community agencies to support attendance and academic success for all students and to assure compliance with attendance rules as determined by the Education Act.


This position is also responsible for monitoring Supervised Alternative Learning plans and contributing to system wide school engagement initiatives intended to support student attendance.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Direct

Investigate upon referral, the reasons for the student's absence utilizing standardized screening tools;
Assist the family and student in coping with and alleviating circumstances that adversely affect the student's ability to attend school through direct intervention and/or referrals to community pathways;
Support referrals to community resources that may be of assistance in reducing barriers for student attendance;
Ensure that students and their families are provided culturally sensitive services that enhance students' experiences with learning;
Assume primary responsibility for addressing cases of severe school refusal or withdrawal as defined by the Education Act;
Assume primary responsibility for the presentation to the SAL committee and monitoring of Supervised Alternative Learning Plans;
Provide therapeutic, solution focused individual and group intervention for identified students;
Maintain appropriate documentation and records;
Other professional duties as assigned.

Indirect

Consult with the Manager of Mental Health Services for support, direction or input regarding attendance related issues;
Understand alternative education pathways offered within the TLDSB for early leavers;
Capacity building throughout the region in the area of attendance through individual consultations, workshops and presentations for staff/admin;
Commitment to ongoing professional development.


Qualifications:

A two-year college diploma in social service work from a College of Applied Arts and Technology and/or a 3 year BA;
Demonstrated ability to support a broad range of psychosocial issues that impact student attendance and a proven ability to develop effective intervention plans;
Demonstrated knowledge of service delivery approaches rooted in intersectionality, and anti
- racist/anti-oppressive practice that nurture safe(r) spaces, cultural humility and inclusivity;
Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team, and liaise with multiple stakeholders;
Demonstrated ability to provide brief evidence-based interventions with children, youth, and families;
Experience working in public education is preferred;
Demonstrated initiative, organization, communication and interpersonal skills;
A thorough understanding of all relevant legislation and standards of practice;
