Summer Camp Nature Educator
Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG) is hiring a team of seasonal
Nature Educators to relaunch our summer camp programs.
TBG is a not-for-profit charity focused on connecting people with plants and inspiring people to live in harmony with nature.
Working with a committed and enthusiastic team, the Nature Educators will lead a group of campers during our outdoor summer nature camps.
Nature Educators will engage participants in the natural world through hands on activities such as crafts planting, caring for and harvesting in the garden as well as exploring and learning about the adjacent gardens and nearby ravine system.
June - August weeks)Job Scope
- Under the guidance of the Education Manager, Nature Educators will research, plan and prepare camp programs and activities.
- Prepare materials for crafts and activities.
- Monitor the health and safety of participants including sun safety, care around bodies of water and supporting safe play.
- Lead a group of campers through planned activities including providing clear instructions and demonstrations and guiding participants throughout their activity.
- Provide supervision for a Summer camp group through a variety of indoor and outdoor activities in the Toronto Botanical Garden and nearby Wilket Creek ravine
- Work closely with volunteers by providing clear directions on how they can best support the program.
- Assist with the planting, maintenance, and harvesting of vegetables, fruit and herbs in the Toronto Botanical Garden's Teaching Garden.
- Support other educational programming opportunities as required.
Experience/Skills
- Enrollment or completion of a university or college program related to environmental/natural science, horticulture, outdoor recreation, or education an asset.
- Experience working with and educating children, particularly outdoors.
- Knowledge and interest in native plants and animals and/or vegetable gardening.
- Strong communication skills
- Basic proficiency with the Microsoft suite.
- Have or be willing to acquire a Police Reference Check and First Aid Level C certificate prior to the start of your contract.
- Some availability to work nights, weekends, and statutory holidays is an asset.

Canada Summer Jobs eligibility requirements:
- You will be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
- You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment

International students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.
- You have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and will be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
Youth Canada Works eligibility requirements:
- You are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada.
- You are legally entitled to work in Canada.
- You are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
- You are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment.
- You do not have another fulltime job during the YCW work assignment.
- You have registered as a high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment.
- You intend to return to studies during or after the YCW work assignment.
Job Type:
Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 weeks
Salary:
$17.00-$19.00 per hour
