Intermediate Financial Analyst, Corporate Tax

The Intermediate Financial Analyst will work directly with the Manager, Corporate Tax to support the tax function at Empire Life.

The role is very diverse and will allow the Intermediate Financial Analyst to gain knowledge and experience in sales/commodity tax filings, premium tax filings, corporate income tax filings, trust return filings and other compliance-related filings.

This exciting role will provide the incumbent with the opportunity to gain valuable training, knowledge and experience in the insurance and financial services industries.


What you'll be working on:


  • Provide support with respect to the compilation of corporate income tax, premium tax and sales/commodity tax filings.
  • Responsible for the installment remittance process for all corporate, commodity and premium taxes for the Company and its subsidiaries with oversight from the Senior Corporate Tax Analyst and/or Manager, Corporate Tax.
  • Prepare annual segregated fund and mutual fund trust returns.
  • Support the accuracy of the tax accounts of the Company and its subsidiaries through the completion of GL and CRA/MRQ tax account reconciliations.
  • Review and identify areas of improvement in policies and procedures to ensure they are consistent and compliant with tax legislation, regulatory requirements and industry practices.
  • Provide technical and research support to ensure Empire Life is compliant with federal, provincial, local and applicable foreign and domestic tax laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with other business units and departments on product launches and other special project work and participate in departmental projects as required.
  • Ensure compliance with internal control policies.
  • Other duties as assigned

What you'll need to have:


  • 2+ years experience working in an accounting firm or in an industry with accounting and tax exposure. Completion of a university or college degree in business administration, accounting or finance. Knowledge of Canadian tax legislation. Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks. Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel. Effective oral and written communication. Key competencies are initiative, judgment, analytical thinking and problem solving. It is imperative that the incumbent is highly organized, has a keen eye for detail and accuracy, as well as being able to take initiative, be selfmotivated and have personal responsibility.

It would be nice for you to have:

  • Exposure to insurance and/or investment fund industries is an asset.-
  • Aspiring to become a CPA or in the process of doing so
