Detailed Overview:

The Clinical Psychologist is responsible and accountable for Psychiatric Resident Training services including providing supervision, training and educational consultation to psychiatric residents and psychology students/interns in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT) and psychodynamic supervision, as well as the provision of group and individual therapy, consultations, brief therapy interviews, case reviews, and the evaluation of process and outcomes to ensure the continuing quality of the service.

In collaboration with the Coordinator, Group Therapy Services, the Clinical Psychologist provides psychological services and is responsible for the provision of a full range of psychological assessments/tests, interpretations and treatments in New Westminster Mental Health Outpatient Services that include Outpatient Psychiatry, Group Therapy Services at the Royal Columbian Hospital as well as the Community Mental Health Centre.

Develops, coordinates and delivers in-services, presentations, psycho-educational and support groups, provides therapy and education services to the Reproductive Mental Health program, and participates in research activities in collaboration with other mental health programs.

The Clinical Psychologist provides psychological assessment and diagnosis, and collaborates with physicians and other care providers regarding treatment planning for patients/clients experiencing acute psychiatric signs and symptoms.

As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the Clinical Psychologist also participates in guideline development, quality assurance, program development and evaluation, clinical research and education activities.


Responsibilities:

  • Provides a full range of Psychiatric Resident Training services including the provision of supervision, training and educational consultation to psychiatric residents and psychology students/interns, as well as the provision of group and individual therapy, consultations, brief therapy interviews, case reviews, evaluation of process and outcomes to ensure the continuing quality of the service.
  • Liaises with the Department of Psychiatry and Fraser Track Residency Training Program Director to coordinate and deliver psychotherapy training for psychiatry residents that includes the delivery of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Axis I presentations, dialectical behavioural therapy and psychodynamic supervision.
  • Contributes to the design of interventions to address or reduce mental health challenges and to reinforce patient/client skills and abilities. Provides evidencebased psychological treatments that include CBT/DBT to patients/clients addressing a wide variety of presenting clinical issues.
  • Participates in ongoing development and provision of evidencebased group therapy service for adults, using a variety of group therapy approaches including CBT, DBT, mindfulnessbased cognitive therapy, psychodynamic therapy and interpersonal therapy.
  • Provides a full range of psychological services to patients/clients experiencing acute signs and symptoms of mental illness.
  • Provides and conducts comprehensive psychological assessments of patient/client functioning to identify and determine underlying disorders, levels of cognitive function and intelligence, factors contributing to functional impairment, mental competency issues and conditions under which specific behaviours occur.
