Working primarily doing street/community-based outreach, the Harm Reduction Worker will interact with service users, distribute harm and risk reduction materials, provide information and referrals, maintain up-to-date data entry and assist with further tasks as directed.

This position is expected to work onsite during the COVID-19 pandemic as required.


Responsibilities:


  • Work collaboratively and positively with the Harm Reduction Health Promoter and colleagues
  • Interact with service users to provide harm reduction and substance use services and support primarily within the Oakridge/Warden Woods community
  • Maintain a clean and organized dropin space
  • Monitor and maintain an adequate supply of harm reduction materials to meet the ongoing needs of the Oakridge/Warden Woods community
  • Distribute harm and risk reduction materials and collect used needles and stems adhering to established COUNTERfit safety protocols and following universal precautions
  • Prepare kit materials in accordance with COUNTERfit kit making guidelines
  • Provide crisis prevention and stabilization through instrumental counselling, practical support and referrals to appropriate services including medical and legal services, treatment programs, income assistance, mental health services and other community resources.
  • Maintain a clean and organized outreach supply setup, including updating of information and brochures, stocking of outreach bags, etc., and putting supplies away when done shift.
  • Complete daily log of activities and enter data into the computer programs (NEO) and data bases as appropriate
  • Provide backup to other Substance Use and Mental Health programs as required including the COUNTERfit fixed site, mobile outreach and satellite hubs.
  • Provide communication regarding schedule to the Program Manager, Harm Reduction & Hep C, and to the Health Promoter

  • Prepare for and attend 37 hours of monthly meetings and share program information with colleagues
  • Complete administrative tasks as required, i.e. timesheets
  • Participate in ongoing program evaluation
  • All other duties as required

Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Lived experience of homelessness or streetinvolvement considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Harm Reduction practice and strategies
  • Knowledge of SRCHC Harm Reduction programs/services
  • Understanding of homelessness, drug use and mental health issues
  • Demonstrated ability to connect with people who use drugs on the street and in a dropin setting
  • Knowledge of community services and resources in the Oakridge/Warden Woods neighbourhood
  • Good nonverbal and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate respectfully and effectively
  • Ability to actively and accurately listen
  • Knowledge of and experience providing peertopeer support
  • Ability to prevent and deescalate conflicts, and confidence in developing, asserting and maintaining strong boundaries
  • Experience with overdose prevention and response
  • Ability to advocate effectively
  • Open to feedback with a willingness to learn
  • Demonstrated display of sensitivity to others
  • Good interpersonal skills, open, nonjudgmental
  • Ability to work well with others and function as a member of a team, collaboratively working in a team setting
  • Proof of triple COVID19 vaccination status will be required for employment
