Position Summary

  • The Asthma Educator (AE) works collaboratively with the other AE to provide patient care congruent with the Vision, Mission, Values and strategic objectives of the organization. The Asthma Educator assists with efficient and effective operations of the Paediatric and Adult Asthma Centre including program planning, resource allocation, utilization, monitoring indicators and creation of a supportive working environment. The AE fosters partnerships with internal and external stakeholders that promote safe, effective, evidencebased and quality outcomes in a patientfocused environment.
  • PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • General:
  • Contribute to the maintenance of relationships/partnerships through:
  • Establishing, developing and maintaining collaborative, collegial and interdisciplinary partnerships with all internal/external stakeholders to facilitate care for patients across the continuum of care.
  • Utilizing effective problem solving options/alternatives to achieve best possible outcomes for all involved.
  • Ensure quality communication throughout the Asthma Centre and partner services by:
  • Creating and maintaining effective communication processes with, members of the Asthma Care Team, Referring Physicians, and Specialists, the patient, the family and the community.
  • Fostering an environment that enables communication, creative thinking and participation.


  • Specific

  • Responsible/accountable for quality resource management of Asthma Centre through:
  • Providing effective and appropriate educational sessions to patients, families, community groups, and other allied health professionals as scheduled.
  • Maintains competence at performing spirometry, and Exercise Challenge testing, at an advanced practitioner level.
  • Daily fiscal and operational management of the Asthma Centre inclusive of risk management, participation in patient care rounds (as applicable), communication with patients/families.
  • Regular verbal and written communication/reporting to the Program Manager.
  • Identifying personal educational needs and collaboratively planning strategies with the Program Manager to meet those needs.
  • Fosters a work environment that promotes professional development and responsibility by:
  • Maintaining awareness about current health care developments and adherence to professional, ethical, cultural, accreditation and legal standards.
  • Mentoring, coaching and supporting other members of the Team to function maximally in their role, enabling them to identify strengths and/or opportunities for further development.
  • Supporting and promoting integration of evidencebased practice, research, opportunities for training, workshops, seminars or other educational endeavors that would assist individuals/team to achieve goals and enhance quality care.
  • Accept responsibility, be accountable, take risks, evaluate actions and learn from mistakes.
  • Fostering opportunity within a supportive learning environment for clinical student placements, orientation of new staff, and education programs for the patient, family and Team members

Qualifications:


  • Education:
  • Graduate of an accredited educational program in a health science field, and member in good standing of affiliated college is required.
  • Completion of requirements for national certification as a Certified Respiratory Educator with the Canadian Network for Respiratory Care is required.
  • Proficient in spirometry both testing and interpretation at an advanced level is required.
  • Current BCLS certificate is required.

Experience:


  • Five or more years of related clinical experience in child and family health required.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary team participation employing principles of patientfocused model of care.
