Job Description of Field Technician
Sola Engineering Inc.(Sola) provides geotechnical engineering, material testing and inspections and Environmental testing services in the greater Toronto area. Sola operates in Ontario under a Certificate of Authorization issued by the Professional Engineers of Ontario.

Sola is looking for hiring
field technicians (Minimum - 2 years' experience in Geotechnical engineering inspections and testing field primarily in Ontario with working knowledge of MTO, CSA, CCIL and ASTM procedures) for the year 2023 work program.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Follow and observe Sola's Employee Handbook, IT and General Security Policy, and any other such documents manuals and procedures, current and future versions (jointly called "Sola Policies").
  • Follow the Sola's standard Health and Safety Policy on the job sites and at office including the policy provided by the Government to protect everyone in the Country from COVID1
  • Perform quality control testing in the field to determine if the required standards, and/or project specifications are met.
  • Work in Sola's Services department and report to the Soils Engineer.
  • Ability to visually classify soils and determine if they are suitable for the desired purpose;
  • Majority of the works will be fresh concrete testing and performing compaction testing using portable nuclear gauges.
  • Perform concrete testing to ensure the product has the required qualities. The testing to be performed includes slump testing, air content using pressure or volumetric methods, unit weight, temperature, casting cylinders, storing cylinders at site for initial curing and preparing concrete testing cards with all pertinent information;
  • Determine the compaction and moisture of the soils using a nuclear density gauge. If the compaction or moisture percentages are not within the project specification requirements, provide recommendation how to comply;
  • Perform asphalt testing to ensure the product met the project specification requirements. Temperature tests and compaction testing using a nuclear density gauge is to be carried out;
  • Provide technical advice to management and operating departments related to field activities.
  • Ensure projects are completed within required timeframes and cost.
  • Develop, provide and promote technical solutions, options and initiatives to meet client needs.
  • Maintains ongoing communication, follow up and delivery against promise with clients.
  • Coordinate and supervise the work of other professional and technical staff.
  • Supervision of drilling, collecting soil and ground water samples and measuring ground water in Piezometers.
  • As a Field Technician working primarily on active construction sites you will be involved with field observation, testing, sampling and inspection of soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt and structural steel placement

Note:
All disciplines may not be encountered on every project.

  • Under the direction of more senior staff and project managers, you will perform routine laboratory tests and assist in more complex tasks, as required

Included may be:

  • Soils
  • Proctor [moisture density], Atterberg limits, and sieve analysis methodology.


  • Aggregates

  • Sampling and performing sieve analysis.


  • Concrete/Grout/Masonry

  • Sampling and visual observation, performing air content and slump tests, testing compressive and flexural strength, taking tests of mortar and grout, and obtaining core samples.


  • Asphalt

  • Sampling and performing HMA [hot mix asphalt] tests in both field and laboratory settings using nuclear density gauge and core machines in the field; and solvents and sampling at high temperatures in the laboratory.
  • Laboratory / Administrative
- calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment;
- keeping the laboratory organized and clean;
- calculations and data reduction of test results;
- record keeping; and
- other administrative duties, as appropriate.


Qualifications:


  • A Bachelor's degree or diploma in geotechnical, Civil engineering field from a reputable university or college is desired.

Field Technician:


  • 1 to 2 years of relevant Canadian experience in geotechnical engineering in the fields of construction and transportation are required.

Must be able to lift up to
50 lbs and work in tight spaces.

  • Well organized, with ability to manage and prioritize several assignments and deliver them on time and on budget.
