Provides technical support for primarily senior level laboratory courses and some departmental equipment in Physics. Trains students, staff and faculty in the safe operation of equipment. Sets up, tests, and performs measurements using a wide variety of electronic equipment. Maintains an inventory of equipment and consumables. Designs, fabricates, and maintains complex experimental equipment used in teaching and research. Maintains computers, computer networks and computer data acquisition interfaces used in teaching. Provides technical assistance for physics lecture demonstrations.


Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree in Physics with training in electronics and computing. 3 years of related experience. An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study ad experience is acceptable.

  • Thorough knowledge of preventative maintenance techniques for electrical and electronic systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of WCB and WHMIS safety regulations.
  • Good knowledge of electrical, electronic and mechanical design and prototyping.
  • Good knowledge of research techniques and strategies.
  • Excellent analytical reasoning, problem solving and research skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to set up, test, and perform measurements using a wide variety of electronic test equipment, e.g., oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, data acquisition devices, etc.
  • Ability to design, fabricate, and maintain teaching and research equipment using a variety of power and electronics tools.
  • Ability to install, operate and troubleshoot hardware and software systems (e.g. Windows XP, LabView).
  • Ability to setup and maintain a computer network.
  • 30 w.p.m. keyboarding with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain records with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to lift, move or carry equipment or materials up to 20 kg.
