Full-Time Renewable Contract

Come lead the Unionville Curling Club (UCC) as its General Manager, reporting to the Board of Directors.

Our club, where friendship is a tradition, and has served the community of Markham for over 100 years Located in beautiful downtown Unionville, the Club has four sheets of ice and operates seven (7) days a week during the curling season running from October to April.

From April to October, the club facilities are available for non-ice rentals.


Job Purpose:


The General Manager, in cooperation with the Board of Directors, is responsible for managing all matters of the Club and ensuring that the Club is running smoothly and efficiently while providing excellent customer service to all the members (over 400).


The purpose of the job includes:

  • Curling program development and programming, working with Club member volunteers
  • Manage the Curling club staff, including Ice Maker and Ice technical staff, the Bartenders, and bookkeeper. Ensure that all staff are properly trained and appropriate safety measures are in place and enforced. Ensure all staff have the required certification including first aid.
  • Work with League/Section volunteers overseeing the daytoday activities of the leagues and maintain the master curling calendar.
  • Proactively seek and pursue opportunities to attract new curling members;
  • Proactively seek to increase the number of rentals by promoting the use of the Club's facilities by members and the public during the curling season, including the ice, lounge, bar, and kitchen; to attract revenuegenerating uses/rentals of the Club's facilities during the offseason, including the lounge, bar, and kitchen.
  • Coordinate event and rental management including pricing, setup, cleanup, and collection of fees. Work with the Board to establish prices annually for memberships, rentals, bar and proshop products.
  • Oversee the appropriate staffing, ordering, pricing, sales and inventory control for the bar and pro shop
  • Coordinate instruction, learn to curl, clinics and lessons.
  • Ensure that all licenses and permits are current and appropriate
  • Manage the membership and affect the invoicing, revenue collection (for leagues, capital, initiation and locker rental fees), and issue the Club roster.
  • Assist the Finance Director in preparing an annual budget
  • Prepare and present to the Board, a monthly activity report including the budget, monthly profit and loss statements, including an assessment of risk
  • Manage the bookkeeper and ensure all invoices, expenses and revenues (including petty cash and drink tickets) and correctly paid, tracked and recorded. Ensure that all the financial statements, books and records of the Club are maintained in good standing at all times and reconciled every month.
  • Manage the yearend financial statement, and the Year-End engagement review.
  • Make recommendations to the Board regarding items requiring repair, improvement and/or replacement. Work with the Board to develop the Club Capital Plan and lead its implementation
  • Ensure that all Club equipment is maintained in good, safe and working order
  • Ensure all service contracts are uptodate and being effectively utilized. Review contracts annually to ensure best value for money.
  • Ensure that all insurance policies are uptodate and appropriate.
  • Maintain uptodate sponsorship information.
  • Ensures cleanliness of all Club facilities, both interior and exterior.
  • Ensure the Club is in compliance with all (municipal, provincial and federal) statutes and legislation
  • Promotes diversity and inclusion in the workplace and amongst the members.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous curling club or equivalent management experience
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with demonstrated experience in customer service.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Highly organized and able to work in a fastpaced environment.
  • Certified Smart Serve, Standard First Aid and CPR with AED
  • Experience and efficient with Quickbooks, SQUARE, Wagepoint, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Managing the maintenance and tracking of bar and proshop products, including profit/loss and inventory
  • Selfdisciplined and able to work a variable work schedule.
  • Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and creating an environment of inclusion.
  • Broad knowledge of all applicable federal/provincial legislation including, but not limited to, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, Alcohol and Gaming Regulation and Public Protection Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workers Safety and Insurance Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, and relevant guidelines/protocols/policies of Public Health Ontario, and the Ontario Curling Association.
