We have an immediate opening for a
General Technician (Geotechnical, Hazardous Materials and Environmental) to join our Earth and Environment group in our
Sarnia, ON office.


What a day at EXP has in store for you
Assist local and neighboring EXP Project Managers with expanding portfolio in Geotechnical, Environmental and Hazardous Materials field work (as described below);

Geotechnical Specifics

  • Monitoring Site Grading Activities
  • Soil Identification and Examination of Subgrade Soils
  • Insitu Density and Compaction Testing
  • Concrete, Mortar and Grout Sampling and Testing
  • Asphalt Sampling and Testing
  • Asphalt and Concrete Core Sampling
  • Interacting with Materials and Geotechnical Engineers routinely;

Hazardous Materials Specifics

  • Conducting building investigations for asbestos, designated substances, mould and other hazardous materials; Collecting air and bulk samples during investigations and abatement of the designated substances and hazardous materials.
  • Providing engineering/technical support for projects involving the abatement of the aforementioned materials;
  • Onsite work including, indoor and outdoor air quality sampling and monitoring (instrumentation set up, calibration, data acquisition and analysis), and workplace exposure assessments);
  • Analyzing phase contrast microscopy (PCM) air samples for asbestos using NIOSH 7400 method; and,
  • Preparing written technical reports pertaining to site investigations and abatement;

Environmental Specifics

  • Completing Environmental Site Assessments (Phase I and Phase II ESAs);
  • Preparing written technical reports pertaining to Phase I and Phase II Site Assessments as well as associated site investigations;
  • Environmental Site Remediation Oversight (Underground Storage Tank Removals, Soil and/or Groundwater Remediation);
  • Groundwater and surface water sampling;

General Specifics

  • Report writing;
  • Liaising with contractors, building strong relationships;
  • Ensuring laboratory equipment is maintained in good condition; Operating computerized and digital testing equipment;
**What your experience looks like

  • College Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety; Environmental or Civil Engineering Technology or Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Undergraduate Degree in Natural Sciences or Environmental Science will be considered an asset.

General Skills and Abilities We Seek:

  • Experience working in a client services environment with developed client service skills;
  • Strong written skills including the ability to write technical reports, receive feedback and address edits from the reviewer;
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary groups as well as independently;
  • Highly motivated and able to work well within a team environment;
  • Possess a valid driver's license and own vehicle;
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; and,
  • Must be available to work during weekends and nights, if required.
  • Able to organize, prioritize, set and adjust priorities and schedules independently.

Geotechnical Assets (not required):


  • Possession of a current CCIL Certification for HMA Marshall and Superpave, Aggregates and/or Concrete Testing is an asset;
  • Field experience in concrete, earthworks and asphalt is an asset;

Hazardous Materials Assets (not required):

  • Experience as hazardous materials technician and/or Designated/Hazardous Materials Surveys/Air Quality Assessments and/or related experience is an asset;
  • Knowledge of Designated Substance Regulations including but not limited to Ontario Regulations 278/05, 490/09, 833 is an asset;

Environmental Assets (not required):


  • Experience in Environmental Consulting and/or Phase I, II and III Environmental Site Assessments is an asset;
  • Knowledge of Environmental Site Assessment Regulations including but not limited to the Environmental Protection Act, Ontario Regulation 153/04 is an asset; Knowledge of
