LAO invests in and fosters the long-term development of its lawyers - a process that starts with the summering and articling experience.

Students are provided with the opportunity to experience different areas of law, giving you a comprehensive articling experience in social justice.

To provide legal representation and advice to refugee claimants in the Toronto District.

LAO is seeking an articling student with a background and interest in Immigration and Refugee law and someone who demonstrates a passionate commitment to refugee rights and who is able to work collegially in a fast paced, legal environment.

As per Legal Aid Ontario's Hybrid Work Policy, this role has been designated as LAO Workplace based: Role is physically based in an in-person LAO workplace up to five (5) days per week with the potential for hybrid work based on the nature of the role, and as client service and operational needs permit

Assignment: 10 month contract, start date will be July 22, 2024

Compensation:
$62,507.00 per annum prorated for 10 months (approximately 1,202 per week) plus benefits.

Key accountabilities:


Required skills & experience:


  • Eligible to undertake articles in Ontario.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice or public interest work.
  • Demonstrated excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sound judgment.
  • Solid understanding of the mission of Legal Aid Ontario.
  • Proven understanding in providing excellent client service to vulnerable populations.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and video platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
  • Possible travel to detention centres
  • Lived experience as an immigrant and/or within refugee and immigrant communities is an asset
  • Fluency in languages other than English is an asset.
