Position Summary/Description


Reporting to the Research Integrity Officer (RIO), the incumbent serves as the primary, first point of contact in the preliminary review of allegations related to research misconduct.

Manage and investigate the activities of the Research Integrity Officer and Deputy RIOs.

Provide professional consultation to members of the McGill community ethics officers, scientists outside McGill, Journal editors, and other external sources who are requesting advice on the McGill policies and procedures concerning allegations of research misconduct.

Analyze initial assessment of all possible cases of research misconduct that are submitted to the Office of the RIO

Main Responsibilities


Act as the primary, first point of contact in the process of the receipt and preliminary review of allegations related to research misconduct.


Determine whether the allegations are based on:

  • _ Fall within the definitions of research misconduct as per the McGill University Regulations concerning the Investigation of Research Misconduct

The Tri-Agency Framework:
Responsible conduct of Research or the FRQ Policy for the Responsible Conduct of Research; and_
- _ Would have constituted a breach during the time the alleged breach occurred._
- _ Falls within the mandate of the Office of the RIO or falls within the mandate of another body at McGill (e.g., office for mediation and reporting, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, etc.)._

  • Support the RIO during a breach by obtaining supplementary materials.
  • Support the Investigation Committee if an investigation is called for and manage the Investigation Report.
  • Report to the VP-RI, the Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research in Ottawa, the FRQ Ethics Office and the US Office of Research Integrity Manage the implementation and the effectiveness of the Office's online tracking system to ensure that milestones and deadlines (set by the Regulations, and the funding bodies) are met.
  • Responsible for opening every dossier and ensuring that it is tracked in the system. These responsibilities also include ensuring that statistical data can be extracted from the software to prepare annual reports as needed (see below).
  • Train the RIO and deputy RIOs on the new software.
  • Manage operational systems for retaining the complete file of the dossiers. The file will include the records of the investigation and all documents and other materials furnished to the RIO and the Investigation Committee. These files will be forwarded to the McGill University Secretariat once it has been determined that the dossier is closed.
  • Lead the process of inclusion of external consultants as needed for specific dossiers (e.g., image duplication experts). As such, the incumbent will ensure an adequate budget is available for the external consultants.
  • Responsible for creating the annual report to the McGill University Senate and the Board of Governors; (b) the annual report to the Tri-Council Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research; and (c) The US Office of Research Integrity. Review and manage the Research Integrity Policies of the McGill affiliated Institutions (e.g. the RI-MUHC, the CIUSS l 'Ouestdel'ÎledeMontréal, and the CIUSS Centre Ouest,) in relation to the McGill University Policies.
  • Ensure compliance of all aspects of the Office of the Research Integrity Office with policies and procedures in McGill Regulations, the Tri-Council Framework and the FRQ policy on the responsible conduct of research.
  • Prepare (presentations) concerning the mandate and procedures of the Office to be given around campus (e.g. to incoming tenure track professors, all new faculty, new members of the administration, and student groups). Develop and delivery of training material and awarenessraising activities campus for students, faculty members and staff.
  • Liaise with Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for any dossier in which the complaint or respondent is a student. This will include assessing the coherence of the dossier with the mandate of the Office of the RIO and also assuring representation from GPS on Investigation Committees as required as per the McGill Regulations.   • Liaise with the McGill Animal Compliance Office and the Animal Policy and Welfare Oversight Committee for any dossier relating to possible breaches of animal care policies.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with the Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research in Ottawa, the FRQ office of Ethics, the US Office of Research Integrity and within McGill and its affiliated institutions with their counterpart in those institutions.
  • The Research Integrity Analyst will attend meetings and represent the RIO and Deputy RIO's at internal and external meetings as needed.
  • Ensure a high level of responsiveness and effectiveness while handling several complex files.
