Duties:


Working for the Ontario Waterways the Canal/Waterway Maintenance Worker I and Maintenance Worker II will be responsible for conducting repairs, maintenance, and inspections of contemporary and historic facilities, structures, equipment, machinery, and mechanical equipment at locks, bridges, dams, and assets on the Trent-Severn Waterway.


Work environment:


The Ontario Waterways is a boater's paradise, attracting pleasure boats from across North America to travel across the Trent-Severn Waterways 44 locks and the Rideau Canal's 47 locks.


The Trent-Severn Waterway is a National Historic Site, 386 km in length, which links Lake Ontario at Trenton with Lake Huron at Port Severn on Georgian Bay and attracts about 1.4 million visitors each year offering heritage tourism and recreation.

EDUCATION (ALL STREAMS):

  • Successful completion of secondary school education or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience
Degree equivalency



OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION (ALL STREAMS):


  • Possession of a valid Province of Ontario Class "DZ" or higher driver's licence within six months of appointment.


EXPERIENCE (ALL STREAMS):


  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of grounds, buildings, machinery and equipment;
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of hand tools, power tools, maintenance and construction equipment including boats and motors;
  • Experience dealing with the public in a professional capacity.

EXPERIENCE STREAM 2 (GL-MAN-06) ONLY:

  • Experience in at least one of the following: general carpentry; welding; concrete and masonry; or other semiskilled trade techniques;

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION (ALL STREAMS):


  • Possession of a valid Province of Ontario Class "AZ" or higher driver's licence.

EXPERIENCE (ALL STREAMS):


  • Experience performing maintenance on locks, bridges, dams and other waterway assets and infrastructure.

KNOWLEDGE (ALL STREAMS):

  • Knowledge of the Parks Canada Agency and the Trent-Severn Waterway;
  • Knowledge of basic measurements and estimating quantities
  • Knowledge of general health and safety practices and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE STREAM 2 (GL-MAN-06) ONLY:

  • Knowledge of the materials, products, and common calculations used in construction;
  • Knowledge of construction, maintenance, and trade theories, terminology, and practices;

ABILITIES (ALL STREAMS):

  • Ability to operate and maintain construction and maintenance tools and equipment;
  • Ability to repair and maintain grounds, buildings, structures and equipment, identify equipment malfunctions and make or arrange for necessary repairs;

ABILITIES STREAM 2 (GL-MAN-06) ONLY:

  • Ability to read and interpret work instructions, shop drawings and/or plans and specifications;
  • Ability to conduct inspections and to plan and prioritize work according to service requirements;
