Position Summary - This position is responsible for teaching students in an assigned field of study using a diverse set of instruction methods and tools. The position develops curriculum, prepares teaching materials, provides assessments of students' progress. It ensures the proper stewardship of college facilities, equipment and other inventories. The position is also responsible for upholding the College's policies and procedures and for participating in meetings and events and on committees.
Duties & Responsibilities - Teaches students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments and independent or group projects.
- Develops curriculum and prepares teaching materials and outlines for courses including audio visual and webrelated materials where appropriate.
- Prepares, administers and marks papers, tests, exams and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students' progress. Provides detailed feedback on student performance.
- Assists and provides support to students and potential students by advising on program curricula and career decisions.
- Provides individualized or group tutorial or remedial instruction to students who require it.
- Maintains effective stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software and tools.
- Arranges for and supervises independent or group projects, field placements, laboratory work or handson training.
- Adheres to VCC policies and procedures including being available to students and maintaining confidentiality of student information.
- Participates in departmental and college meetings and events. Consults with other College departments and may serve on committees concerning matters such as budgets, curriculum revision, and course and certificate or diploma requirements.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Area Hiring Criteria
- Have or are in process of completing a teacher training certificate, BC Instructor's Diploma, or equivalent.
- Two (2) years recent experience teaching atrisk youth, who present challenging learning styles and behaviours, in a selfpaced, individualized Adult Basic Education setting, or its equivalent.
- Two (2) years recent experience working directly with youth who face challenging life circumstances, including drug and/or alcohol use, mental illness conflict with the law, sexual, physical and psychological abuse, learning disabilities, being in government or foster care, homelessness and behaviour/authority conflicts, or equivalent.
- Adhere to a philosophy of student centered and individualized learning.
- Experience teaching all of Intermediate English, Math, Science, and Social Studies (Grade 10 equivalence) and one of Advanced English, Math or Biology (Grade 11 equivalence).
- Demonstrated experience and skills utilizing a variety of teaching methods and assessment strategies to accommodate the unique learning styles of students who have experienced limited success using traditional teaching methods.
- Previous success working collaboratively and effectively in a teamteaching situation.
- Experience with online teaching, learning management systems and educational technology.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English.
