Job Summary:


  • Reporting to the Sr. Director of Facilities, and working directly with the Energy Manager, the Powerhouse Operator will be responsible for the monitoring, and distribution of our facilities energy. This includes monitoring weather, electrical grid, current hydro pricing, maintaining our cogens and diesel generators, mechanical and absorption chillers, hot water boilers, chilled and hot water tanks, cooling towers, compressed air, gas compressors, and electrical switchgear.
  • The Powerhouse Operator will also work closely with our electricians, contractors, and other departments as required, in a Health Canada regulated facility. Documentation and attention to detail is a must.
  • The job requires working closely with the Energy Manager, scheduling vendors, keeping up on preventative maintenance records, and communicating findings. You will be responsible for maintaining equipment and performing repairs as needed to minimize losses. You will be responsible to advise and procure necessary spares and replacement parts as well as comply with the facility's safe work practices.
  • This position is Monday-Friday, 7:30am4pm.

Role and Responsibilities:


  • Capable of learning software. We will teach you to operate the systems and software, however, background knowledge in control systems must already be in place.
  • In this position you will become comfortable and familiar with other processes within the facility to better understand energy delegation.
  • Must have a mechanical skillset, be an analytic thinker, and know how to troubleshoot.
  • Critical thinking to consider the impact of your upstream and downstream actions.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Must live within proximity of the facility to be quickly available if required.
  • Forklift certification and Working from Heights ticket an asset but will certify.
  • Available to work a varied schedule during emergencies and outages.
  • Perform housekeeping functions and equipment cleaning necessary to maintain the Powerhouse in a safe, orderly condition.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:


  • Possess a skilled trade certificate (or) equivalent experience with everything listed in this posting.
  • Previous experience in power plant operations and knowledge of electrical & controls systems
  • Experience with high voltage switchgear operations an asset but not necessary.
  • Troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills. Must be able to use tools and perform repairs if necessary.
  • Knowledge of predictive & preventative maintenance practices.
  • Experience with control logic.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work at heights, possibly in adverse weather conditions, climb stairs, and ladders.
  • Ability to enter and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift 22kg (50 lbs) of weight.
  • Must be able to accurately read and interpret instruments and gauges.
  • Ability to hear audible alarms and detect changes in noise levels of rotating equipment and portable radio communication.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and good communication skills.
  • Depended on to report to work as scheduled. Reference checks will be completed for this position.
