Description

Location:
Toronto, Canada

Thales people architect solutions that support 85 million mainline and suburban passenger journeys, worldwide, every day.

Our Rail Signalling and Communication systems are used on metro lines across major cities, and 72,000 kms of route, 52,000 trains per day in 16 countries are controlled by our Traffic Management Systems.

Together We deployed the first-ever nationwide ticketing system which processes over 50 million ticketing transactions in 100 cities daily.

The primary responsibility of the Researcher in Autonomous Transportation is to lead the research and development of complex system using traditional and cutting-edge vision sensors (e.g., camera, LiDAR) as well as the supporting tools for Autonomous Transportation Solutions.

The researcher must drive the design process of the systems or sub-systems that contain modules implementing algorithms within his/her established expertise in data analytics, computer vision, machine learning, control theory and artificial intelligence.

The researcher must provide technical advice to R&T members and other departments regarding the latest scientific developments in the core areas autonomous transportations and supporting tools, identifying opportunities for new product offerings or enhanced functionality for enabling the Autonomous transportation product line.

The researcher must design, implement and test the feasibility, robustness and performance of the solutions in order to meet the system design and safety requirements.

The researcher must present written reports of the system performance evaluation to the R&T team as well as senior management stakeholders.

Alongside these responsibilities and aligned with the natural progression of this role into technical management, the researcher must lead other team members supporting the development and implementation of the systems.

Key Job Functions:

  • Participate in the technical analysis and modelling of very complex, realtime, autonomous system use cases
  • Translate safety requirements for new autonomous transportation product offerings into test suites for the underlying machine vision, artificial intelligence, sensor fusion and adaptive control algorithms and their implementations
  • Oversee the design and implementation of prototype systems using computer vision and machine learning modules; manage the integration of software and hardware on experimental platforms
  • Support overall design solution to product definition including system architecture, failure mode analysis and system redundancy for R&T projects
  • Participate and provide inputs to the design and implementation of a set of progressively more complex 'proof of concept' platforms
  • Perform prototyping in simulation environments and with "proof of concept" platforms
  • Ensure that safety is built into the design by early identification of potential issues based both on the proposed system architecture and on its individual modules/functions.
  • Participate in 'hands on' development, integration, field testing and analysis of results
  • Work with multiple sensors and help develop the latest software algorithms to control complex, safety critical systems
  • Analyze and communicate results of simulations and/or experimental tests, formulating methodologies and developing tools as needed to collect, process, analyze and visualize large datasets
  • Prepare written and oral reports, following a sound, evidencebased methodology to analyze, solve, document and present proposed solutions to technical problems
  • Prepare and present reports to different stakeholders, from internal technical groups, senior management, clients and external collaborators
  • Write maintainable, reusable code, leveraging testdriven principles to develop highquality computer vision and machine learning modules
  • Conduct code reviews for junior members of the team to ensure the highest code quality in computer vision and machine learning components
  • Act as a technical leader, internal consultant, and scientific liaison for autonomous transportation, keeping up to date with the latest scientific developments in the field, identifying opportunities for new product offerings or enhanced functionality, and conceiving, organizing and leading activities to communicate this knowledge to the R&T team
  • Contribute to the development of strategic intellectual property for autonomous urban mobility, identifying and assessing innovation opportunities, and promoting an IPfocused development strategy among team
  • Provides technical support to product team and other departments as required to help with productization of new solutions
  • Prepare and review technical reports and provide findings and solutions to challenging research problems
  • Keep abreast of relevant technology developments in the industry and academia as related to R&T projects

Key Requirements:

  • A PhD or minimum of a Masters in Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics,
