The North York YMCA Centre is one of eleven full service health and fitness centres in the Greater Toronto Area that provides a variety of health, fitness, recreation and community programs.


In this role, you will:


  • Supervises all cleaning related services, including light duty, project, and general cleaning including laundry Services.
  • Plans, coordinates and supervises the activities of Housekeeping Cleaning team; prepares work schedules for cleaning and coordinates activities with other departments; assists Facility Manager with staff recruitment, orientation, training; identifies performance concerns to Facility Manager.
  • Undertakes preventative cleaning procedures and minor repairs to building equipment and responds to work orders in regards to cleanliness and minor breakdowns; takes appropriate action to rectify any problem, including coordinating third party contractors. Ensures all cleaning equipment is clean and in good repair at all the times.
  • Coordinates with night cleaning contractors as required; provides direct supervision of contractors to ensure work is being performed; coordinates with Facility Manager.
  • Ensures the safe and continual operation and cleanliness of the pools, whirlpools, and steam rooms; including related equipment and chemicals as required by relevant legislation, taking appropriate action relating to cleanliness and repairs
  • Assists with materials management relating to building supplies, ensuring inventory levels are adequate and materials are ordered and replaced as required.
  • Inspects and completes daily audit of areas to ensure established safety and cleanliness standards are met.
  • Recommends or arranges for additional services required such as painting, repair work, renovations or replacement of furnishings and equipment in coordination with Facility Manager.
  • Responds to all emergencies in the facility and reports any and all maintenance issues to the Facility Manager. Functions as building operator as required in the absence of Facility Manager.
  • Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association. Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.
  • Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.
  • Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

You bring:


  • Completion of High School diploma or GED;
  • Minimum of 5 years related supervisory experience in housekeeping
  • Demonstrated ability in using and operating cleaning equipment for deep cleaning in a safe manner; experience training others in the safe and effective use of equipment
  • Experience in pool operation an asset; Pool Operator Certificate preferred (certification must be obtained within first three months).
  • Willingness to increase knowledge and skills in facility cleaning and maintenance
  • Excellent organization skills, team player, independent
  • Well developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and nonvisible dimensions of diversity
  • Standard First Aid and CPR; WHMIS and related health and safety training
  • Flexible availability including evenings and weekends
