Victoria Women's Transition House (VWTH) is looking for a full-time
Children's Support Worker to join our growing team
We are a non-profit charity, providing emergency shelter, counselling and support services for women of all ages, with or without children, fleeing from intimate partner violence and abuse.
We are a vibrant, collaborative community looking for exceptional people to help us grow as we work towards our mission of ending intimate partner violence.
Details of the Position:
The Children's Counsellor provides crisis intervention, basic counselling and support to resident children and their caregivers.
They Participates in the development, modification and evaluation of client service plans and act as an advocate for families and provide referrals to appropriate services.
Other duties include:
- Plans, prepares and conducts crisis intervention and shortterm counselling using techniques such as active listening, conflict resolution and basic counselling with resident and nonresident mothers/caregivers and their children
- Provides emotional support to clients, both immediate and on a followup basis.
- Provides skill building in areas such as parenting skills, anger management or selfmanagement techniques.
- In conjunction with Children's Activity Workers, provides appropriate activities for children. Models age appropriate interactions and assists mothers/caregivers in providing general care of their children.
- Works as part of a team and contributes to the overall management of the household. Documents and reports all safety, maintenance, supply and equipment issues.
Shift:
- Monday-Wednesday 84 and Thursday Friday 117 (hours may be adjusted)
Qualifications:
- Excellent knowledge of the dynamics of family violence
- Welldeveloped interpersonal, counselling, oral and written communication skills
- Good organization, time and general management skills
- Ability to work effectively within a team
This position supports an essential service working with direct client contact and requires union membership, satisfactory completion of a criminal records search, TB test and Standard First Aid Certificate.
Wage and Benefits:
This is a union position and starts at $27.09 per hour with paid time off and excellent benefits package and Municipal Pension Plan.
