Richmond School District operates 38 elementary schools, 10 secondary schools, alternate programs, continuing education and a number of additional facilities.

The district enrolls approximately 21,000 students (K-12) and employs over 3000 dedicated staff.

This position provides library services to students and staff such as assisting with research, demonstrating

systems and equipment and retrieving materials. The incumbent uses and maintains a web-based

integrated automated library circulation system to catalogue, find, and circulate library materials. The

incumbent assists with supervision duties, reinforcing school guidelines and behavioural standards for

students to ensure a safe environment. This position is under the supervision of the school Administrator

and receives instructions from the Teacher Librarian, but work is performed independently and with

Responsibilities:

Assists students and staff in research and other requests by providing information on learning

resources and reference services, demonstrating the use of library equipment and cataloguing

systems, assisting with research, and retrieving library materials.

Uses a web-based integrated automated library system to check in and out print and non-print

items, maintain circulation records and data bases, locate resources, conduct bibliographic

searches, and enter prepared data and information.

Generates reports such as inventory lists or lost materials as required.

In the absence of a teacher, monitors student behaviour in the library and maintains a positive,

respectful environment.

Assigns, directs and trains student monitors.

Shelves and files print and non-print library materials.

Sets up displays of library materials, resources and special events.

Receives, unpacks, verifies order, catalogues, barcodes and prepares new library materials for

shelving and circulation.

Performs minor repairs on library materials as required.

May assist in the purchasing of library materials.

Produces and distributes overdue book lists to teachers, parents and administrator.

Collects overdue fines and handles according to school procedures.

Monitors student use of the library when Teacher Librarian is unavailable.

Makes arrangements for the booking of educational materials from the District Resource Centre.

Performs other job-related and clerical duties of comparable importance, difficulty and

responsibility as required.

Required Qualifications

Grade 12 or equivalent plus a Library Technician Diploma from a recognized institution or

equivalent combination of education and experience.

Extensive knowledge of computer library cataloguing software used in School libraries.

Ability to use Educational Software and the Internet.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with school staff and to assist

students.

Ability to perform physical activities, such as lifting, moving and unpacking boxes of books and

other library materials and pushing or pulling a loaded book trolley.

Ability to organize workload and perform duties with minimum supervision.

Ability to operate standard office equipment.

This position is in the bargaining unit, with an hourly rate of pay of $27.20.
