What can I expect to do in this role?:

  • You will make it possible for students with Acquired/Congenital Deafblindness to access information and interact within their environment.
  • You will maintain the student's rights to privacy and dignity and ensure personal safety is not compromised at all times, recognizing the constraints inherent working within a school setting.

How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:


  • Secondary School Diploma with a Diploma of Intervenor for Deafblind or Support Specialist program certification from a recognized educational facility and/or equivalent training;
  • Current First Aid, CPR and Crisis Prevention Intervention Training and/or Behaviour Management Systems Training or equivalent.

Skills and Qualifications:
Your background and experience enables you to meet the following requirements:

  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL);
  • Knowledge of Braille and Large Print Notes;
  • Experience working with students with sensory impairment/learning /physical disabilities, and has a background in child development;
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation/policies/procedures/guidelines/practices that address student care and safety;
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and other professionals (i.e., Two Hand Manual Touch Cues, Concrete Cues and Picture Symbols);
  • Sound judgment and problemsolving skills;
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
