Job Level - N/AThe Assembly of First Nations National Veterans Council ("Veterans Council") represents First Nations veterans within Canada and the United States of America, as well as First Nations within the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the Canadian Department of National Defense, First Nation Peacekeeper societies, First Nations police forces and First Nations who have served in other law enforcement agencies.
The Veterans Council shall promote the recognition of contributions of First Nation veterans in Canada made in all conflicts as allies to Canada, to educate First Nations about the history of First Nations veterans, develop and maintain a database recognizing First Nations Veterans and to engage with Veterans Affairs Canada in efforts to advance reconciliation and healing.
Roles and Responsibilities
The roles and responsibilities of the Veterans Council members include, but are not limited to:
- Raising awareness of veteran issues and advocating on behalf of First Nations veterans in the Yukon and across Canada;
- Attending, preparing for and participating in National Veterans Council meetings and reporting back to the AFN Yukon Region and Regional Chief;
- Establishing partnerships and relationships with Veterans Council members in the Yukon Region, and from other regions;
- Reporting to the Regional Office on their work as well as the broader activities and initiatives of the National Veterans Council;
- Contributing to the development and maintenance of a database recognizing First Nations veterans;
- Supporting and leading engagement and advocacy work with Veteran Affairs Canada to advance reconciliation and healing for all First Nation veterans; and
- Supporting, advising on and recommending changes related to service quality and timeliness, policy, programming and/or legislation impacting First Nation veterans.
Term
The term of the Yukon Representative on the Veterans Council is three years starting from the date of appointment. A Yukon Representative can serve for a maximum of two terms.
Eligibility Criteria
Yukon representatives on the Veterans Council must be:
- Considered to be a veteran of:
- the United States Armed Forces;
- Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP);
- Canadian Department of National Defense;
- First Nation Peacekeeper societies;
- First Nations police forces;
- Canadian Rangers; or
- 19 years of age or older;
- of good character, credibility and reputation;
- committed to adhering to the roles and responsibilities of a Veterans Council representative as set out in the Veterans Council Terms of Reference; and
- able to produce a satisfactory vulnerable sector check.

- A copy or scan of two written letters of reference
- A copy or scan of a valid Vulnerable Sector Check (if you do not currently have a valid Vulnerable Sector check, you will be expected to obtain and provide one upon appointment to the AFN National Veterans Council.)
